1.0 out of 5 stars Get the non-wireless model instead
The wireless remote became defective almost immediately. I contacted Taylor and they said the wireless version was discontinued. They very nicely sent me the non-wireless version for free. They also included an instant-read thermometer.

Overall, I'm pleased with Taylor as a compnay.

...unlike the similar Weber POS.

I bought the Weber wireless remote thermometer from Anazon. I tried using it with next to no success. The base unit would not keep communicating with the remote unit, even when base and remote units were a foot apart. Forget about communication with the remote inside and the base unit at your grill outside. Sent it back to Amazon.

Bought this Taylor unit. Just got it and tried it. Communication is solid and the temperature displays (sender and remote) are accurate. (Kept me from over-cooking a niceribeye I was trying to cook rare.) No problem communicating with the grill outdoors and me inside...even with 32 F weather. The displays are plenty big.

Minus is that the plastic used in the construction of the two units does not seem real rugged or very high quality. The warranty is also only one year vs. the 10 years that Taylor gives on their wired unit.

It looks promising...and at least it does work, unlike the Weber.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ingenious and Functional, September 6, 2005

Cook's Illustrated, a magazine that among other things extensively compares kitchen items and equipment wrote that this is the best remote meat thermometer, and I can't disagree. It is much more programmable and flexible than other makes. It works well in the oven, on the grill, in the smoker. I used it to cook a brisket for 12 hours when on vacation with my family. Having this device allowed me to leave the smoker and spend time with people instead of feeling like I had to be at the smoker to check progress all day long. The temperature seems to read acurately, the transmition range, although it may not be as long as the manufacturer states, is still very long, at least 70 feet while going through walls. I can't wait to use it for other items. Now I wish they made a remote oven thermometer so I could monitor the temperature at different spots in my grill or smoker without removing the lid.

My experience couldn't be more different than the previous buyer's. My thermometer and pager link flawlessly, alerting me continuously to temperature changes, and when the pager is out of range of the base. I bought this 10/05, and when the probe died a few weeks ago, I contacted Taylor, who responded quickly by email, alerting me of the LIFETIME warranty on the device. I shipped it back to them, and they ship me a new one. Original receipt and box NOT necessary. I have found the device very accurate, reliable, and useful. It has saved many a roast, steak, etc, as I am prone to starting cooking, and getting distracted by other projects. I am very pleased.

Have been using this outside in the Bar-B-Que and it works fine. If you follow the instructions and not let the heat get over 400 degrees you will have no problem. It is accurate and lets you know when the temp. of the food is where you want it---rare, med, or well done. Has good read distance from the transmitter to the remote unit. The only problems that some have written about would indicate that they did not follow the instructions.

2.0 out of 5 stars Great device - Until the probe fails, June 21, 2006

If the probe was not so fragile I'd give this unit 5 stars. The remote works well although I have had it lose contact with the sender if I was out in front of my house (my grill is on the back deck). This is a minor annoyance, but what really ticked me off was that the probe failed (indicating "HIGH" reading) in conditions where my MIU France unit keeps on going. Unfortunately the MIU France unit doesn't have the remote capability. I purchased about 5 extra probes for the Taylor unit directly from Taylor by mail. But within a few weeks several of those failed. I don't mind having to replace a probe once in a while but when you have to replace two in one cooking session it gets pretty annoying. I'd suggest staying away from this unit.

I bought the Taylor Wireless digital cooking thermometer with remote pager, Model #1474, from Amazon in July 2005.
It's a marvelous tool and worked wonderfully for a few months. I boasted about the product to my fellow cooks. Then, some of the "Meat" functions stopped working. However, I used the program function to bypass those problems. This week, 2 months after the warranty expired, the unit all of a sudden went crazy. No matter what the setting, after a few seconds of operation, the temperature display changes to "high," the timer kicks on and starts counting up, and both the base and remote units start beeping. In other words, the device is now useless. And, yes, I used the Reset button but it did not cure the problem.
I've only used the thermometer about 20 times and it has never been dropped or otherwise abused. I note that Taylor doesn't offer that model anymore on its website. And, Amazon is selling the unit at half price. Is that because the whole batch, Made in China, is defective? Was there a recall that I missed?
As much as I liked the 1474, I don't think I'll risk buying another. At several dollars per use, it's too expensive.

4.0 out of 5 stars works well, November 24, 2005
This review is from: Taylor Wireless Oven Thermometer with Remote Pager (Kitchen)
I have used this for several months. I use it in an oven, not a grill. It works as advertised with no problems. I wonder if the people who report the probe burning out might accidentally be bringing it in contact with the metal grill.

5.0 out of 5 stars I love it!, January 10, 2006
This review is from: Taylor Wireless Oven Thermometer with Remote Pager (Kitchen)
It's a little confusing to set up but once you get the hang of it, it's great. You literally walk away, take the remote with you to another part of the house and still know what's happening to your roast. Alarms are nice and loud. The construction is a little delicate. It also can be used as a timer which comes in handy if you have 2 things going at once. All in all, very satisfied.

Great product, the beeps are not "squelchy" - just right. My husband mowed the lawn and wore the remote, no problems.
