Taylor describes how to select the best land for a farm and design the best layout for paddocks, pastures, buildings, roads and lanes. He explains how to select the correct stallion for your mare, and how to get your mares in foal and keep them that way. Taylor also covers how to care for newborn foals, raise strong weanlings and correct yearlings, prep yearlings for the sales and have the horses reach their peak at sales time.

Joseph Lannon Taylor has spent more than 50 years managing horse farm operations and advising Thoroughbred and Standardbred breeders. As a farm manager for 40 years at Gainesway Farm in Lexington, Ky., he was instrumental in making Gainesway the premier stallion station facility in the world. He now advises his four sons in the operation of Taylor Made Farm in Lexington, a world-renowned Thoroughbred nursery, sales agency and stud farm.

If he has ever been around a horse, has been to the races or if his wife has wanted to own a horse ever since she was a little girl, the dream soon becomes a desire to own a horse farm. The day you decide to get into the horse business, you are really getting yourself into two businesses. You are in the horse business by design and in the real estate business by default.
