Rooibos is Afrikaans for "red bush." Grown in South Africa's Cederburg Mountains and harvested during the summer, this tea acquires its unique red color as a result of fermentation (in mounds) and oxidization, when it is spread out to dry in the sunlight; naturally it is green.

Rooibos is known for its health benefits stemming from its rich content in vitamins, antioxidants, flavanoids and minerals (inter alia, magnesium, calcium, iron, copper, zinc, potassium, fluoride, manganese and alpha-hydroxy) and has a long tradition of medicinal use among the local Native population; among other things, it is known to help cure asthma, hay fever and other allergies, acne, eczema, colics, indigestion, insomnia, and nervous tension. Containing very few tannins and no caffeine, rooibos has a distinctive aroma and amber color.

This tea blends well with various spices and condiments; my favorite mixture is a delicious loose leaf blend sold by my local tea store, which features orange peel, cinnamon, grated coconut, finely minced chili and red pepper. For a more commercial alternative, though, Tazo's Red Bush tea is a great choice as well: a rich, exquisite blend of rooibos, hibiscus, orange peel, rosemary, several lemon ingredients (lemon myrtle, verbena and balm), as well as a number of sweet spices. This is one of the best teas I've ever tried. It's smooth and soothing to the senses. I highly recommend it.

I was devastated when Starbucks stopped carrying this a few years back. It is the perfect rooibos tea... not too bland, not to strong. I have terrible stomach and digestion problems, and a cup of this a day stops most all of it. I'd swear it also boosts my immune system and keeps me from getting sick... haven't had a cold in years.

I found that this spin on black tea very closely approximated the taste of a caffeinated tea, though apparently it has no caffeine? The subtle bitter aftertaste is there, but not in a bad way. Very authentic and not too crazy- someone looking for a "regular-ish" black tea decaf that's just barely a little more exotic than plain black tea will find what they are looking for in this box.

The following recommendation is based on having enjoyed over 100 tea varieties in the last 2+ years.

When steeped as recommended...it tastes great.... for more flavor steep longer... also tastes great then too.

The Tazo Redbush Tea has a wonderful, smooth taste. We have been enjoying it for years but have found it harder & harder to find in the grocery stores. I was excited to see that Amazon is now selling it with the "eligible for free shipping" products, but the price is around double what it normally retails for ($4.99 at Starbucks). I can order 2 boxes off another website & pay the shipping for about the same price as one box on Amazon. Hmmm, that's a bit unusual for Amazon as they have become my favorite store for about everything else!
