5 of 5 people found the following review helpful By Paul S. Rottenberg on October 22, 2012
Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
This recording by the Kalichstein, Laredo, Robinson Trio of the Tchaikovsky and Arensky piano trios presents good, rock- solid performances of these popular Russian chamber works, with perfect intonation, plenty of technique, and well-thought-out interpretive logic. Close in timings and in spirit to the well-known cd by the Beaux Arts Trio, K,L, R present this music as it might have been heard in someone's house rather than in a concert hall. Less extrovert than Beaux Arts, and certainly less so than the live and lively Argerich, Kremer, Maisky version, this version calls attention more to the inner logic of the music and the balanced restraint which is an unappreciated aspect of Tchaikovsky's chamber works (and other music, as well).

Leader Kalichstein blends in with his group as Menahem Pressler does in the Beaux Arts, and you'll find other similarities in his general approach to the music. Both groups play in perfect concord and both provide enjoyable listening on many levels, but K,L,R perhaps get more inside the music, providing a clearer presentation of the counterpoint in both works. Enjoyable performances in a more classical spirit which remind us that Tchaikovsky's favorite was Mozart. Warm and detailed sound and interesting notes by the pianist complete an attractive release.
