Most Helpful Customer Reviews

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful By Andrew R. Barnard on November 8, 2012
I view Gergiev as one of our most exciting conductors, admiring his drive and stress on visceral impact. On this disc, he performs some of the most popular Russian compositions. Since most of us have heard at least a good number of these works many times, I welcomed the idea of new insight from a dedicated Russian. Could Gergiev make these works come alive with his usual passion and fervency?

Sadly, something went wrong. Gergiev's usual abandonment and thrilling coarseness is gone. It's replaced with smooth, predictable conducting with little individuality. It's so un-Gergiev you wonder if he left himself at home during the recording session. Where did this polite, restrained conducting come from? Gergiev is the last conductor I expect to morph into a supporter for "no excesses, please". The only number that seems to go beyond deliberate carefulness is the Capriccio Italien, but even there one wishes Gergiev would go further.

The only possible saver for this disc is the sound, which is bright and spacious. Gergiev's Kirov Orchestra ends up sounding second rate without the usual involvement from the podium. I suppose beginning listeners will find the disc satisfying, but when the greatest Russian conductor alive approaches these warhorses, it's hard not to be disappointed when the result is only average.

I would imagine that after earlier recording sessions of masterworks like Prokofiev's Romeo & Juliet, the Kirov musicians couldn't be that excited about recording a Pops or Russian Greatest Hits album. If they felt that way, you wouldn't know it listening. The musicianship is outstanding like you would expect from this group. Just recognize this is a greatest-hits-type-album, and you might not enjoy listening to it all at once. This Capriccio Italian rendition is the best I've heard on disc.
