5.0 out of 5 stars Telarc shows how to get dynamics right,, March 10, 2008
This review is from: Tchaikovsky: Marche Slav; Rimsky-Korsakov: Russian Easter Overture (Audio CD)
One of the most stirring albums I have ever heard.
Telarc pioneered the digital recording and wide dynamic range music.
There are a great many challenges to getting music recorded that has wide dynamic (loud to soft) range. Many end up compressing on the top or losing the soft. Telarc chose these sets and orchestras (their first 1812 also part of this effort) of music to prove and improve the technique. The results are simply one of the most stimulating combinations and thrilling "music-to-break-your-lease" example available.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Little Bland for my Taste, February 17, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Tchaikovsky: Marche Slav; Rimsky-Korsakov: Russian Easter Overture (Audio CD)
This is a nice compilation of Russian music for most tastes, and the Telarc recording is superb. However, I feel the St. Louis Symphony, with all its great musicians, plays a little laid back. My Jr. High School recording (1961) of the "Russian Sailors Dance" has much more commitment and lets the wildness of the finale come through. (Not bad for a bunch of 12-14 year olds). I prefer the Georg Solti or David Zinman approach to some of these pieces. For those who like a smoother interpretation, I recommend.
