I have heard many different performances of Tchaikovsky's masterpiece, Swan Lake, many of them excellent. However, this is bar none the best of the best. Not only is the playing excellent from all of the strings, brass and woodwinds, but Ermler's tempos are right on the mark. Many recordings I hear and I think, "Why is he conducting it that fast???" Dancers would NOT really be comfortable dancing it at that tempo.

Other tempos seem rather slow. I own the recording, but somehow the 2nd disc in the set managed to somehow get very deep and prominent scuffs on them that cannot be repaired. Since this recording has been discontinued, I have been scouring the internet for 2 years trying to find it again.

I finally lucked out and did indeed find it. It's costing me $105, but to me, it's worth the price for this GEM of a masterpiece recording.

I bought several other recordings of the Royal Opera House at Covent Garden with Ermler conducting, including Sleeping Beauty and Giselle.

Those recordings are equally brilliant. I will be making MANY backup copies of this rare OOP recording this time.

BTW- Anyone looking for this recording- IT IS OUT OF PRINT!!! I made the mistake of ordering this recording last year, but it was NOT the COMPLETE Ballet, but "The Essential Highlights". The same recording, but NOT complete.

I agree with all the other reviewers. Why don't conductors understand this music as Ermler does? This recording has been a gem for years and yet little recognized.
Another gem is the complete Nutcracker under Ermler. He brings out things no other conductor ever dreamed of. Get Sleeping Beauty too!

How sad that five years ago one of your reviewers had to pay $105 for this three-disc recording, which is now listed for less than $8.

He's right, though, that it's a terrific performance. My guess is that this is because Ermler and his orchestra had countless previous performances WITH DANCERS to perfect this version, and the conductor doubtless had lots of practice, WITH DANCERS, in his native Russia.

Another favorite version is that by Fistoulari, also with a British orchestra.

My english is not enough to express exactly what I'd like to say and I lack musical jargon but I'll try. I admit that I had a very elitist view on Swan Lake because I only knew these few romantic pieces that everyone knows with the little chickens etc. But then I attended in St. Petersburg the Marijinsky (Kirov) Theatre performance of the ballet in a romantic setting and I was lost forever. Afterwards I walked the Nevsky Prospect to the bank of the quiet broad stream of the Neva and it was as the apotheosis of Swan Lake where the hectic music of act IV (Nevsky Prospect) culminates in this broad melodic theme of uneartly beauty. After that Swan Lake was in my brain forever linked to this places in St. Petersburg and I never got normal again.

Home in The Netherlands again I went to the CD shops and bought four different complete Swan Lakes. Of these the Ermler performance is by far the best in my opinion because it is not soft. It's typical russian in the way that it's powerfull and dynamic.Technical the sound is also superb.

Once in the Ermler mood I discovered that Conifer records had Ermler performances of the four great classical ballets: Sleeping Beauty, Nutcracker and Romeo and Juliet. I bought them all and they are great. Pity that Conifer Records just had a short life and disappeared allready a long time ago. Two of these four I had to buy in the outlet business. Perhaps you can still find them here or there. You won't regret. I rate him above Gergiev who I consider a nearby second.

BUYER BEWARE! This recording of Tchaikovsky Swan Lake is NOT one of the highly acclaimed recordings of Tchaikovsky by the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House Covent Garden with Mark Ermler as the Conductor. Rather, it is a recording of Swan Lake by the London Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Michael Tilson Thomas. The Identification codes embedded in the disc clearly reveal this fact. Insert this disc in any computer drive and see for yourself. Nevertheless, I feel that the LSO's performance on this disc is just as great as the Royal Opera House. It is a five-star recording. The three-stars I gave is for the misrepresentation.
