Format: Audio CD
It's been slow for me to catc up to the younger ex-Soviet conductors that aren't famous. Such is the classical music industry in Russia that there's great depth of talent, and much of it winds up in London. Here we have the excellent Vassily Sinaisky giving a rousing performance of Sleeping Beauty excerpts, played with style and commitment by the BBC Philharmonic, one of the secondary ensembles behind the BBC Sym.

This CD was originally a freebie that came with an issue of BBC Music, but it's first-rate, even if Sinaisky doesn't aim for maximum excitment and drama. Among super-bargain versions, nothing beats Andrew Mogrelia on Naxos, but that one is complete. Here we get Act I nearly complete, none of Act II, and a generous sampling of the climax of Act II up to the Apotheosis. It's very satisfying, if only the engineering weren't so dull - the orchestra is fiarly far back and there's no enough birghtness. However, that's not enough to mar some fine musicmaking.
