5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning collection at a great price December 2, 2011
Format:MP3 Music|Verified Purchase
Here we have a terrific collection of the most popular music from Tchaikovsky, plus some that is less well known. The highlights are the symphonies and the violin concerto. The performances and recordings are generally very good to excellent.

The Violin Concerto is given a tour de force interpretation by Israeli violinist Vadim Glutzman, with British conductor Andrew Litton conducting the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra. This is a concerto that deserves the Tchaikovsky's erratic passionate nature to be transmitted from both the soloist and the orchestra. Here the first movement by itself leaves you exhausted from the drama that this combination is able to create. It is a delightful respite when Glutzman is able to convey the lyrical beauty of the slow movement (which also has its passionate moments). The third movement starts as it means to go on, passionate momentum and fireworks from the violinist, but also tender and beautiful playing from the winds in the orchestra. As with most of the pieces in this collection the recording is second to none, with great sharpness of detail and undistorted climaxes.

Glutzman also gives us a piece that was new to me: "Souvenir d'un lieu cher" a poignant and playful memory of a "place that is dear to one's heart", once again played with the Bergen and Litton combination. This is reminiscent of Elgar's violin pieces from the same period, fairly light and romantic, played by Glutzman without schmalz but with occasional bravura.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning Classical Collection for Mere Pennies! May 20, 2012
Format:MP3 Music|Verified Purchase
If you need to fill holes in your Tchaikovsky collection, or you're looking to replace that lost or broken CD. Or, if you've never bought a Tchaikovsky CD or MP3, then this is the collection for you - at $1.99 you can hardly go wrong. You can't beat the price with a stick and you get hours and hours of quality music by one of the greatest Russian composers of all time. There's The Nutcracker Suite of course, and then there's Swan Lake, The 1812 Overture, The Romeo and Juliet Overture, Symphonies 1-6, amongst others. This is some of the best and well known classical music outside of some pieces by Bach, and Beethoven's 5th. The 1812 has been in so many movies, and every xmas they play Dance of the Sugarplum Fairy, or some such. The same is true for R&J, and Swan Lake. You couldn't get out of the way if you tried. Don't get me wrong, this music is timeless and gorgeous. It doesn't get better than this! Tchaikovsky was clearly an inspired Russian genius, and it shows on the tracks on this MP3 download. Use it for relaxing, meditation, reading, or as the background for your life. It's simply hours and hours of beautiful music!

FOR THE MUSIC PURISTS: Use this to fill holes in your collection - it's so cheap, it's almost like stealing. There's so much here that you can't go wrong, even if some aren't perfectly executed.

FOR EVERYONE ELSE: Use this to build your collection. There are at least 8 other MP3 downloads like this one which would start the basis for a lovely classical music library. If you get to the point where a piece doesn't sound right, or bothers you in any way, go out and explore alternatives. There are tons out there. What I like, you may not, and vice versa. For example, the only people I like play Rachmaninoff are Rachmaninoff and Mischa Dikter.

4.0 out of 5 stars Unbelievable value! February 11, 2012
Format:MP3 Music|Verified Purchase
14+ hours, and still at $1.99! You'd be foolish to pass this up, unless you already have most of this material. This is all the Tchaikovsky the average listener would ever need. Every performance is competently performed, and all of the true essential pieces are here. I wasn't particularly struck by any of the performances, which is why it gets 4 stars instead of 5. Some of these X5 collections have some really nice gems, but I felt as if this one was pretty average. This was a nice way to fill out my Tchaikovsky collection - I already have better renditions of the Violin and Piano concertos plus the Nutcracker and Swan Lake (and a couple others). For $1.99, this is almost literally a steal.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great sound, OK performances - still a deal October 2, 2013
Format:MP3 Music|Verified Purchase
For around $2, you get most of Tchaikovsky's best-known works in excellent sound. The performances are all enjoyable and professional, if not inspiring.

The main chunk of repertoire included here is Neeme Jarvi's Tchaikovsky Symphony cycle recorded by BIS. The sound is excellent, clear and open. Jarvi's interpretations often hang fire. He seems to lack the knack for building and sustaining underlying tension in these works, attributes that are hallmarks of recordings by Karajan, Maazel, Ormandy and others. For the price, they're fine, but one needs look elsewhere for a view of Tchaikovsky that gets under and beyond what's written on the page.

Recommended.
