Whatever we think about these performances, or about the music itself come to that, the liner booklet accompanying this Virgin Classics disc is a distinctly superior effort. In a short but quite eloquent introductory note, Gautier Capucon describes how he went to St Petersburg on Christmas Eve 2008 to make a live recording of these two works with the Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra under the direction of Gergiev. The young maestro tells us how his wife was pregnant at the time, and how he came completely under the personal spell of the older musician, who helped him find `les mots justes' in which to give us his thoughts on the compositions they were performing. He tells it all in lucid French, but there is a translation available if required. In addition there is a longer essay of a familiar kind by one Philippe Mougeot. Experience has taught me that effusions of this kind can be heavy going even in English. I therefore went straight to the translation rather than labour through it in French, encouraged when I noticed that this translation was by Hugh Graham, who reliably translates into English and not into translationese. Given the benefit of this assistance, Mougeot's essay turns out to be quite informative and helpful in understanding the background to each of the pieces featured.

In my own opinion, both works need a bit of advocacy, not just from the performers but probably also from their editorial associates. Tchaikovsky's Variations as we have them are apparently not as the composer first wrote them but have been rearranged to some extent by a strong-minded colleague called Fitzenhagen. Whether we have lost much through this interference I rather doubt.

Gautier Capuçon is not yet 30 years old and has already captured the attention of musicians, critics and audiences alike for his approach to his instrument of choice, the cello - a resonant, dark-toned 1701 Matteo Goffriller cello. Though he creates a handsome and elegant stage appearance (he recently offered a thrilling performance of the Schumann Cello Concerto with Lionel Bringuier and the Los Angeles Philharmonic), his approach to the cello classics is poetic rather than that of a firebrand. This approach rather guarantees a longevity before the public: he places music first and personality second.

In this recording Capuçon is joined with Valery Gergiev and the Marinsky Theater Orchestra in Prokofiev's infrequently performed Sinfonia Concertante, or more correctly, Symphony-Concerto in E minor, Op. 125. The work has exhilarating moments as well as moments of meditation (as in the closing Andante) and is of importance as it is a 1952 re-working of Prokofiev's 1938 Cello Concerto. The performance shows the changes in Prokofiev's ideas well and make this piece well worth getting to know well.

Tchaikovsky's 'Rococo Variations' complete the recoding with a performance that is a delightful interplay between Capuçon and Gergiev. The piece has rarely felt so 'Rococo' as it does here - a delicate balance that allows the cello to shine. This recording is remarkable in that it marks a significant stage in a young artist's career. The combination between cellist and conductor/orchestra is gentle and eloquent. Grady Harp, February 11

This new CD from Gautier Capucon is outstanding. How old is he? 24? 13? 5? Whatever his age is, he certainly plays the cello with the control and wisdom of a much older musician. Tchaikovksy's Rocco Variations are a mainstay of the cello repertoire so I was a little hesitant to hear Gautier's take on this historic work but let me just say, what a breath of fresh air. There is a lightness of his touch and the consistent clarity of his bow strokes that are quite admirable in themselves. His recording o Prokofiev's Sinfonia Concertante, a work that is performed and recorded less, is equally amazing. He has combined his strong technique with an uncanny sweetness of ton of the higher registers producing a breathtaking recording.

Those are poor and boring performances of two great russian works for cello and orchestra. It's difficult
to match those Rococó Variations as the worst played ever! Everything is wrong in this performance which sounds
very slow, dull and bland. The Prokofiev's Cello Symphony is just a bit better but lack in commitment is again
evident. Cellist and conductor are not capable to bring fire into those piece and it's a real pity. An absolutely
dispensable CD.
