The Tea Cake Roundup is a distinctive collection of culinary and family traditions that will warm the heart and satisfy the taste buds. The brainchild of Elbert Mackey, this book preserves the endangered legacy of the tea cake and the accompanying family traditions. The Tea Cake Roundup began with Mackey s personal quest to replicate his Aunt Maggie s tea cake recipe. The tasty treats were a fond link to his past in rural Minden, Louisiana. As an adult living in Austin, Mackey longed for Aunt Maggie s unwritten tea cake recipe. An avid cook, he earnestly set out to recreate the treasured recipe.

More About the Author

Elbert Mackey is an avid cook who has had a passion for food since his grandmother stood him on a kitchen chair to stir cake batter at the tender age of nine. He recalls with warmth the time spent with his grandmother cooking and the tasty reward of licking the bowl after the hard work of preparation.

Elbert's journey to write The Tea Cake Roundup book began with a personal quest to replicate his Aunt Maggie's unwritten tea cake recipe. Elbert was raised in North Louisiana and like other families; food was a chance to share love, conversation and tradition. While other signature dishes from his upbringing remain part of modern cuisine, the tea cake tradition has been all but lost. Determined to preserve the legacy of the tea cake, Elbert solicited recipes and other information for the cookbook via a website, teacakeproject.com. The response touched a chord and submissions poured in from around the country after the book project was featured in USA Today.

The book is a collection of delicious teacake recipes from contributors across the United States. It is much more than a cookbook but a preservation of a small piece of American History. The book includes poems, articles and remembrances of the role tea cakes have played in African American history.

Elbert Mackey is a retired U.S. Air Force major and resides in Austin, Texas with his wife Jacquie. He is the owner of a surgical instrument repair business. Visit Elbert's web site at http://www.theteacakeroundup.com.

Love this book... love the stories and histories.

I've made several of these recipes and the cookies are wonderful.

You can make them thick or thin.

Roll them out as Christmas cookies, frost and decorate them!
