One of my favorite CD's,

If you like Neko Case or M Ward you'll love Dirty Martini. I've heard them described as a modern Crosby Stills Nash because each one of the writers brings their own flavor to the CD yet it still sounds like a band. If you like well crafted songs and amazing harmonies you will love Tea and Revenge.

A wonderful blend of three talented women,

Dirty Martini is a Portland band that started when the three singers/song writers got together for a valentines day concert. I have seen them in concert and they are a wonderful band whose music is polished and creative. Each of them bring a bit of their own style to the music, which is what makes this album special. Every song is interesting and catches your attention. The music is a balance of cool with the adroit and fascinating stories and rocking Americana/classic-alternative guitar riffs. JENNIFER GELBAND of the Boise weekly said "Dirty Martini is sort of like mixing the Breeders, Frente and olive juice and pouring it into a cold glass of Lilith Fair," which I think is the perfect description.
If, like Dirty Martini, you've had enough of empty, you have got to buy this CD.

I love this group that are from Portland, OR. Overall, the sound is pretty mellow, with clever lyrics. I especially like the song about being a carnivore.

I lived in Central America when this band began and ended. Thankfully, a backpacker from Portland, Oregon, came traipsing through town with it on her iPod and thus began my obsession with a band I never got to know.
I can't say enough about this album, though i can see why the band members moved along to new projects - and I say this only because truly, how many albums full of beautifully-worded, luscious girl-rock harmonies can a person take, or a musician make? This one took the cake for me. There was no need to do it again. Both separately and together, these women are gifted, and I still listen to this album several times a week - last.fm keeps listing it as one of my top albums AND top artists :-). I'm a little bummed that they were done and gone by the time I got back here to Portland, but so it goes... The band may be done, but they left quite a little legacy here. If you're debating, at all, whether you should buy this album, do it.

Dirty Martini is my favorite Portland band, and their music rocks. I love this cd and listen to it all the time. I try to go see them at every opportunity, though, because nothing compares to seeing them live. Their harmonies blend so well that strangers who hear the cd in my car ask who they are. This cd is definitely a transition between their solo careers vs their work as a band, but it still rocks. You GO girls!

One of the greatest albums I've heard in a long time. Too bad there's no samples up on Amazon yet.
This and their other self-titled album "Dirty Martini" are both incredible. Kind of a cross between Dixie Chicks & KT Tunstall, sort of a alt-roots-country-rock-acoustic-folk sort of thing. Sounds weird, but it's just unbelievably listenable. What I especially like is the harmonies. Gorgeous, gorgeous harmonies everywhere. You owe it to yourself to hear these albums. And see them live if you can, they're great live too!

Was so looking forward to the new cd, but was so terribly disappointed. Lara, Stephanie an McKinley may blend vocals fairly well, but their solo works are far superior than this. Stephanie and Lara particularly have such distinct, powerful styles vocally and musically, but it's not fully realized here. McKinley, as usual, rambles hurridly through a limited vocal range although Lara and Stephanie help lift those songs.
Since they harmonize well enough perhaps it would be best for Mckinley to provide backup to the power of Stephanie's vocals and Lara's intricate guitar style and songwriting. 'A' for effort, but hopefully looking forward to seperate solo projects for the future.

A brilliant album...,
This review is from: Tea & Revenge (Audio CD)
... if you are a suicidal lover! I found the content of this recording not to be very uplifting. That may not be the intent of the composers. I wish I could give a more appreciative review but I find all three of the members of the band to be far more entertaining on their own CDs. The album is sonically entertaining but it is rare when there is sonic interest that supports the lyrics of the tunes. This album may grow on me but it will take a long time and some very dark days for me to be in a mood to listen to it again. Lara, McKinley and Stephanie, please make more of your own albums!
I really wanted to be excited about this album. Because of time constraints, I never get to see this band live. I know that by their past work, all three are very musical people. Maybe I'm just getting old or I just don't get it. Congatulations to those that do. There is no joy here. |
