Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Some kids like tea parties, others like dinosaurs, and never the twain shall meet—until now? Idle cleverly constructs her picture book as a Miss Manners–style primer on how to throw a delightfully proper tea party, and the prose’s stiff upper lip never falters no matter the monster-sized faux pas occurring within the illustrations. After greeting a guest at the door, “Lead him through to the parlor.” (Illustration: siblings straining to pull a giant green dinosaur through a human-sized door.) Next: “Offer him a comfortable chair.” (Illustration: a dainty pink chair nearly crushed beneath a behemoth rear end.) And on it goes with the dino wreaking havoc upon each highly civilized instance of small talk or cake serving. The cuddly yet giddily preposterous pencil art has the still-life absurdity of Chris Van Allsburg, with characters always frozen in the throes of some larger-than-life struggle against their well-meaning but deadpan dinosaur friend. A fine example of how words and pictures can lock horns to charming effect. Grades K-2. --Daniel Kraus

Review

Praise for Tea Rex by Molly Idle:

"Sure to be enjoyed by tea-party enthusiasts, and even dino fans with no use for a teapot will find themselves drawn to this clever tale of a not-entirely-civilized beast of the past."  —Kirkus

“…Idle has a gift for comic composition...” —Publishers Weekly

"The tension between the text and illustrations provides much to amuse the youngest tea-party hosts." —School Library Journal

"A fine example of how words and pictures can lock horns to charming effect." —Booklist

More About the Author

Molly Idle has been drawing ever since she could wield a pencil. But while she started scribbling before she could walk, her professional career as an artist began slightly later...
It was upon her graduation from Arizona State University, with a BFA in Drawing, that Molly accepted an offer to work for DreamWorks Feature Animation Studios. After five years, a number of film credits, and an incredibly good time, she left the studio and leapt with gusto into the world of children's book illustration!
Molly now lives in Arizona, and when not making mischief with her boys or watching old Technicolor musicals, she can be found at her desk scribbling away, with a pencil in one hand and a cup of espresso in the other- creating a plethora of profoundly whimsical picture books!

I added this to my daughter's bday wish list while it was still a pre-order. It arrived today as a gift and we read it right away. LOVE the illustrations and the story. She quickly picked up on the subtle humor and increasing irony as the story unfolded. My daughter is very into both dinosaurs and tea parties, so this is a delightful tale, and spot on appropriate for a 4 year old. My only complaint is that the book is so cheaply made. The pages are wafer thin so images from previous/next pages show through as you read, and the slightest flick to turn the page leaves creases in the paper. I doubt this one will stand the test of time because I foresee a lot of ripped pages. A disappointment that the publisher skimped so significantly on quality because otherwise it's a really wonderful title! I think this could easily have sold at a buck more per copy in exchange for standard weight paper being used.

In this whimsical guide on tea-time etiquette, a genteel narrator--every bit as refined and thorough as Miss Manners--walks the reader through the protocol of inviting a dinosaur (namely a T-Rex) to tea. Idle uses dinosaurs to showcase comical limitations of the common tea party and improvisations that a proper host must make (for example, the hostess's hat is the only container big enough for a T-Rex). The juxtaposition of this fantastical reality against the matter-of-fact instruction provides a delightfully humorous read for both adults and children.

Idle's illustration talent is evident in her precise line work along with her attention to detail, and her vibrant colored-pencil drawings. The drawings bring this charming tale to life. Whether you are fond of tea or Crustaceous creatures, or perhaps are just curious about the appropriate comportment when the two are combined, you can find enchanting insight here. For the young tea-time host, this book is essential.

I had heard good things about this book, so I bought it without reading it myself, which was a mistake. The pictures are great, but the actual story was not what I expected. If you're good at getting creative and talking off the page with your child, it would be fine but if you want to read the lines, it doesn't tell much of a story. For instance, there is no actual description in the story of the fact that there is a T Rex at tea with you and all the trouble he causes. It reads more of an Emily Post - the proper way to have a tea party, but then has the crazy pictures in the background that clearly show the T Rex not following the rules. But again, no mention in any of the words of what the T Rex does. Again, you can obviously talk this up with your kids, so just better for those with imaginations and creative storytelling skills, and not for those of us who are looking for a simple, easy to read bedtime story ;)

My daughter loved this book and requested it for her birthday, even at 32 years of age she can still appreciate children's books.

My 4 year received this as a gift and the whole family loves it. We turned right around and ordered another one to give as a gift. The illustrations are beautiful and the book's sense of humor in both the text and the artwork appeals to both the kids and the grownups.

I'm not sure who enjoys this book more - my grandson or me! It is a frequent read and it is a joy for both of us. The story is simple yet beautifully written and the illustrations are gorgeous. I will be looking for more Molly Idle books in the future.

This is a cute book and any little girl who is into princesses and tea parties will like it. My mom is a children's librarian and she suggested this book to us since she was buying a copy for her library.

Read once and then let kids take longer looking at the pictures slowly. The appreciation for what's happening in the story grows. A bit more featuring of the girl hostess than the boy host -- but the "Rex" steals the show.
