From Library Journal

This production includes two of Adams's Dirk Gently novels. Dirk is one of the odder creations in detective fiction, although he isn't odd by the standards of his creator, who also wrote the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series. Dirk usually spends his time investigating odd coincidences and looking for lost cats; he believes in the "fundamental interconnectedness of all things." This philosophy leads him to search for lost London cats on Bahamian beaches, much to the dismay of his clients, who get billed for his travel expenses. The plot in Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency deals with an Electric Monk, an unhappy ghost, a lost alien who needs a body to inhabit, a time-traveling Cambridge professor, a couch stuck in a stairwell, and an old university buddy, Richard MacDuff, who is suspected of the murder of his boss, computer company millionaire Gordon Way, the unhappy ghost who doesn't know how to be dead. All of these elements are tied together into a peculiar and amusing tale. The Long Dark Tea-Time of the Soul begins when Dirk oversleeps and misses an appointment with a client, who is found in his locked study, decapitated. The police are perfectly willing to ignore some very odd forensic evidence and declare the death a suicide. Dirk, driven by guilt and a fear of going back to his home (his refrigerator has started lurking in a very ominous way), decides to find out what the green-eyed, 7' horned creature that had been threatening his client knows about the so-called suicide. All he has to do is find the suspect. Once again, under Adams's existential guidance, it all connects in the end, whether one believes it or not. The author does an excellent job narrating his own work, for only he could probably read it aloud without giggling or going mad. Highly recommended for any library with an active sf/fantasy section, readers who enjoy British humor, and all Monty Python fans.ABarbara Rhodes, Northeast Texas Lib. Syst., Garland

From AudioFile

Adams, who is never funnier than when he's examining "the fundamental interconnectedness of all things," runs amuck in a world in which special monks worry about things like the color of the desert (so the rest of us don't have to), and detective Dirk Gently is available to investigate a murder when he's not out searching for missing cats. Adams is a fine, if fast, reader, and you have to figure no one knows better how he wants things pronounced, what timing he had in mind for the snappy replies (usually immediate and deadpan), and how to make everybody sound just one camel's hump smarter by using his natural English accent, leaving you, the listener, to do double takes and hit rewind just to make sure he really said what you thought you heard. 5.0 out of 5 stars The Long Dark Tea Time of the Soul and Dirk Gently, March 25, 2000

Being a long-time fan of Douglas Adams and his "Hitchhiker Series" doesn't automatically mean you will fall in love with Dirk Gently, but...

If you have any love of Norse Mythology, and enjoy a great Detective story...you will love these stories immensely.

Lurking refrigerators, redheaded housekeepers, Odin, Thor, jets, the birth of new Gods, Valhalla, cripsy linen sheets, exploding desks at airports, missing passports, pregnant cats, Coke machines, time warps, hot potatoes, rock groups, soothsayers, strange horoscopes, greed, history, mythology, and of course at the center of it all is the humor of Douglas Adams.

These are two of the most thoroughly enjoyable stories to be found on tape, and I give it 5 stars, it never flags, it holds your attention to the last paragraph of the last page. And it is especially nice to hear them read in the author's own voice, unabridged. Every little jewel is included, nothing is lost in the transition from print to spoken story.

5.0 out of 5 stars Adams reads some of his best work, August 24, 2001

After reading the five (!) books in the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy trilogy, I turned to his two books featuring Dirk Gently, Holistic Detective. Although it took me a bit of time to warm to these stories, I wound up liking them even better than the HhGttG trilogy, much to my surprise. This audiobook version of these two excellent books is everything you would want in such a thing - unabridged and read by the author. On the downside, it is slightly pricey, and on the way far downside, it is out of print, and therefore a little hard to find. (Here's hoping that is remedied soon.) The late and much lamented (by me in any case) Douglas Adams was a writer of rare talent. He could write books about great subjects such as the origin of life and the meaning of existence, and make them riotously funny and entertaining. I believe that the only thing that will keep him from being recognized as a major writer is that he wrote science fiction. Too bad, because science fiction or not, his stuff was superb.

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful fantastical journey, July 18, 2008

I love the Dirk Gently books. They combine the silliness and whimsy of Adams' Hitch-hiker's Guide Books while grounding them on earth and cementing them with an engaging mystery plot.

If you like Terry Pratchett or Neil Gaimon, (or Good Omens ; ) ) You'll love this book. It's full of the digressive musings Adams is known for. (Long Dark Teatime of the Soul begins with ruminations on airport signage)
He still (even though restricted to the Planet Earth) maintains his detached objectivity while describing the peculiar habits we have become used to. In Long Dark Teatime he gains this perspective through the eyes of forgotten gods still sentient and lonely after having been forsaken for the gods of tomorrow. Bored, they start to make trouble.

I HIGHLY reccomend you pick up either of these books. I have the audio version for my long ride to work where I rotate between this and a few mysteries and science fiction titles. This is, hands down, my favourite story for that setting and is also one of my favourite books period.
