Biography

Four-times-married Doris Day made her name as the wholesome American gal with a hint of sass. Her cinematic career is littered with fine examples of the stereotype, and she has acted, danced and sung her way into the hearts of film-goers everywhere.

She was born on April 3 1924 (or 1922, depends on your source) and her acting career began in 1948, shortly after her separation from her second… Read more in Amazon's Doris Day Store

This review is from: Tea for Two / Lullaby on Broadway (Audio CD)
Tea for Two/Lullaby of Broadway is an excellent Doris Day twofer CD that gives us all of the songs from two of Doris' earlier record albums entitled Tea For Two and Lullaby Of Broadway. The sound quality couldn't be better and I love that artwork, too! Great!

"Crazy Rhythm" kicks off the track set and Doris sounds great! The piano arrangement is excellent and Doris aces this easily. "Here In My Arms" has Doris singing at her very best and she never misses a note. The background male vocalists enhance Doris' performance and I really like "Here In My Arms." The arrangement uses the strings to great advantage, too. "I Know That You Know" again features a great piano arrangement--this time with some might fine guitar work; and when Doris comes in this number takes flight! I love those male backup vocalists, too!

"I Want To Be Happy" places Doris squarely front and center--and she sings this with great sensitivity. Doris' voice is perfect for this number and the percussion enhances the musical arrangement a good deal. "I Only Have Eyes For You" is easily a major highlight of this album; Doris sings this so sweetly and the melody is as pretty as ever. The strings help the melody along and Doris gets some help from the great male backup chorus--although with Doris' rendition of this number she didn't really need backup singers at all.

"Tea For Two" is one of my favorite classic pop vocal numbers; Doris delivers this with grace, heart and soul. The flutes are awesome and Doris sings this so well it's practically bewitching! Doris bats this one straight out of the ballpark; "Tea For Two" is obviously a major highlight of this album.

"Lullaby Of Broadway" comes from the movie Gold Diggers Of 1935; but when Doris sings it this tune sounds fresh, new and vibrant. Doris' voice is full of energy and enthusiasm which enhances her performance of this classic pop vocal very well. The backup chorus harmonizes to perfection while Doris does this number. "In A Shanty In Old Shanty Town" shines like gold when Doris performs this with all her might; this is a very attractive number and it is something I could listen to over and over again!

"Just One Of Those Things" features Doris swinging brightly and she puts this over great! The big band style arrangement uses the flutes and the brass very well; and overall "Just One Of Those Things" is a fantastic number. "You're Getting To Be A Habit With Me" also features some mighty fine piano work as Doris croons this flawlessly. I'm very impressed with Doris' interpretation of "You're Getting To Be A Habit With Me." The album also ends very well with Doris performing "Please Don't Talk About Me When I'm Gone;" this gets a slightly slower tempo than I'm used to but wow, how she sings this well! "Please Don't Talk About Me When I'm Gone" is a strong ending for this album.

Doris Day fans will want this for their collections. This also makes an excellent starter CD for those of us who are just discovering the great artistry of Doris Day.

I immediately put the CD in my car radio and I began singing to the songs that I knew from the movies that I had watched on Turner Classic Movies. I am very pleased with this product.
