5.0 out of 5 stars A lot of good information
I purchased this book because my son is having trouble saying words. The book gave me so much information about what causes these problems, and activities that I could do with him that were easy and fun. He is talking so much better. This is truly a wonderful resource for any parent and is easy to understand, but very informative and interesting.

This review is from: Teach Me How to Say It Right: Helping Your Child with Articulation Problems (Paperback)
We bought this book with high hopes that we could help our son with his phonological issues. But we found that the content did not live up to the title. I was unable to find specific, helpful exercises to actually teach a child to pronounce certain sounds. Some of the activities included are "sing 'Old MacDonald' with your child," or "count the number of letters in this word," "speak clearly to your child" or "read a book to your child." In other words, they are all LISTENING exercises, rather than ACTIVE exercises for a child with phonological problems.

My son has trouble with the sound of the letter "l" - the page of exercises for "l" includes activities like "making lemonade," making "lists" and "lick a lollipop." There is no advice on how to help the child who has trouble with "l" sounds. No activities to teach the child correct articulation.

This is not a handbook, or a workbook, but more a guide for spending time with your child and nothing more. Any good parent would be doing these things already! But I found very little help with actual speech.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very helpful to Parents, November 18, 2005
This review is from: Teach Me How to Say It Right: Helping Your Child with Articulation Problems (Paperback)
This book's highly readable chapters on speech and language development and language stimulation will be very helpful to parents. The chapter that assists parents in determining when professional servies are needed and provides a process of evaluating the quality of those services is particularly strong.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very specific exerices to help out!, August 29, 2005
This review is from: Teach Me How to Say It Right: Helping Your Child with Articulation Problems (Paperback)
Finally a book that actually helps. It gives concrete examples and exercises you can do at home with your child broken down by specific sounds that need work. My son just started speech therapy (he's 3) twice a week and these exercises and great to do along with the ones suggested by his teacher. We're seeing a huge improvement in only a few weeks -- and he was diagnosed with a severe phonological disorder.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Guide, December 2, 2005
This review is from: Teach Me How to Say It Right: Helping Your Child with Articulation Problems (Paperback)
I was happy to write the foreword for this book because I believe all parents should have this information. The information provided in this book is practical but comprehensive. The numerous exercises you will find throughout the book will show you how to enhance your child's vocabulary and early literacy skils, and will encourage your child's ability to say sounds clearly and correctly.

If your child has any kind of sound problems or just doesn't seem to talk clearly, buy this book. It is interesting and gives you all the information you need. There were fun activities to do with my daughter to help her learn to say her /l/ sounds. She is doing so much better and I am thrilled.

4.0 out of 5 stars Just what parents need!, July 31, 2005
This review is from: Teach Me How to Say It Right: Helping Your Child with Articulation Problems (Paperback)
Teach Me How to Say it Right is a wonderful book to help parents understand articulation problems while giving them practical tools to help their child. As a speech-language pathologist, I know how eager parents are to work with their child's speech. Dorothy provides the same advice that I find myself giving the parents that I work with in clinics, schools, and online. This book is NOT filled with technical jargon that only a speech-language pathologist would understand. Anyone can pick up this book and learn how to stimulate speech sounds in a fun way so children will want to learn. Great book Dorothy!

As a speech language pathologist, I would recommend this book to parents because it is full of useful information about your child's speech and language, as well as activity ideas to promote progress and improvement. I frequently refer my clients' parents to this book because it is easy to read and provides specifics about many common speech and language issues young children experience.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dougherty's Book is a Treasure, May 24, 2005
This review is from: Teach Me How to Say It Right: Helping Your Child with Articulation Problems (Paperback)
(written by Mary Joyce Perskie, Vice President/Bacharach Institute for Rehabilitation)
"If your child has an articulation problem, Dougherty's book is a treasure. Her explanations are clear, her advice is sensible and down-to-earth, and the exercises she recommends are clever and engaging. Most of all, she details developmental timelines that will enable parents to recognize and address problems properly, including advice on when and how to seek professional help. Her book is elegantly sensible, informative, and filled with reassuring common-sense strategies."
