Book Description

September 1, 2000
This user-friendly book Riwith step by step directions gives any reader the tools to teach someone else to read. With easy to follow lesson plans, built in evaluation, and tips on how to reach students in the way they learn best, anyone can teach a child, teen or adult, an individual or group, a beginning or at-risk reader.

The book's emphasis is on the important early basic skills of:

*Memorizing a sight word vocabulary of words used most often, which can't be figured out by using the most commonly used phonics rules.

*Using the most commonly used phonics rules to figure out words used most often, which don't need to be memorized, and obtaining a firm knowledge of how to apply those rules to future unknown words.

*developing basic comprehension skills to assure that the reader understands what the words are saying.

Check lists are provided for determining how the student learns best. Multiple activities and unique yarns, called "Silly Stories," and cartoon illustrations make phonic rules and sight words fun to learn and more memorable. Lists of consonant and vowel sounds, sight and phonetic words, plus rules used to figure out words are included in the Appendices.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"That Lorraine Peoples deeply believes that anyone can learn to read is evident not only in the broad scope of the material but also in the depth. Reading is essential in all walks of life and that it can be accomplished at any age is a strong message...This book is a valuable tool in helping those who have not yet adequately mastered reading skills." -- Jeannine Solaas, former junior high school educator, Sioux Falls, South Dakota

...Impressively, a person does not have to have a teaching background in order to execute what is being taught... --Today's Librarian, December 2000

Must Have Book For Anyone Motivated To Teach Another To Read The book You Can Teach Someone To Read is a must have book with very easy- to-read directions. It provides a wonderful methodology. Be sure to read the getting started section as it cautions some very important things to consider before beginning the program. This book includes useful sight word lists, clear and easy to read directions, excellent set of rules for sight word and phonic instruction, and the appendixes with summaries are great! I honestly don't believe my children would be at their current levels of reading/comprehension without following this book. It has been a tremendous help and a definite 'on the first shelf' resource reference in our home. I've reviewed other reading selections, some vaguely and others at length and by far I haven't yet seen anything that so simply and eloquently with fewer words help one get to where they need to be in reading and comprehension as the book, "You Can Teach Someone To Read". Granted, people have used other methods and achieved just what I have, but I think this is an easier way to achieve it. Angie, homeschool mother of three, Hoover, AL --Angie, Homeschool Mom of 3, Hoover, AL

"This clearly-written, user-friendly guidebook provides any reader with a day-by day plan to teach phonics and reading comprehension to any student. Each lesson states at the beginning how long the author expects the lesson to last, then proceeds to give detailed procedures for each day. Of course each user can go at his own pace, but the sequential presentation of the lessons assure that the user will always know what to do next. great deal is discussed in homeschooling circles about which phonics program to use, which songs and games work best, and which readers are most appropriate. This book cuts through all those accessories and provides a systematic blueprint that can be expanded on for all students, using all learning styles. With this book, you can teach your child, or any student, to read independently and confidently." Education Clearinghouse --Education Clearing House

From the Publisher

This book guides the user to locate and teach the student's missing phonics skills. After discovering that students with poor reading skills were missing essential elements of phonics rules - much like a ladder missing a rung or two - author Lorraine Peoples found that when those basic skills were taught, students soon advanced toward good reading.

Large studies have proven that beginning readers must learn phonics.

*reading gains for students taught the phonics way averaged twice those made by students using the whole language method.

*To improve reading for those having difficulty, learning and using phonics is essential.

An ideal book for parents to use at home to guarantee their children are not missing out, it also works well for parents who are homeschooling, volunteers in literacy programs, classroom instructors, charter schools, or for friends who use it to help someone who doesn't want others to know they can't read. While one might think a book like this is only for children, adults also enjoy the activities and "Silly Stories" while learning to read.

We are proud of Lorraine's rapid rise as a teacher of reading skills and as a teacher's teacher. Her method based on phonics and a minimum of memorization makes it practical and fun for anyone to teach others to read and to comprehend what they read. Her book is wonderfully useful for anyone, from home schoolers to professional teachers.

4.0 out of 5 stars fun teaching method for phonics, June 1, 2009

This review is from: You Can Teach Someone to Read; A How-To Book for Friends, Parents and Teachers (Paperback)
I actually ordered another phonics program ($65) to evaluate alongside this one and ended up returning the other because it was difficult to follow. This book is easy to understand and the story method of presenting phonics rules is fun for the teacher and the student. She makes it clear that this book is a launching pad, which is why I give it 4 stars. I had to get other materials to have enough words to use for practice with my students. The concept of the method is to turn the phonics rules into silly stories that students can easily remember with simple illustrations. For example, "c" is a copy cat who copies the sounds of "s" and "k" under certain conditions. I like to illustrate the phonics rule in my student's primary journal composition book on the top half of the page, and then write down a lot of words that use the rule below the picture. Then I have the student diagram the words and practice reading them. I have some video tutorials on youtube illustrating her method of presenting the phonics rules. My channel is taskwhiz .
