5.0 out of 5 stars The Very Best Book in this Genre!
This gem of a book is a must for anyone who is trying to help someone else with their ability to read. It is packed with useful lists, clear diagrams, silly stories, and funny cartoons. In a time of declining reading scores, this work is filling a deep need in an entertaining way.

1.0 out of 5 stars Only good for children
I was disappointed with this purchase. I took for 'someone' that it was directed at any age group. However, it is based on very child-based activities which are completely unsuitable for adults. Good for kids but not for anything else.

We are proud of Lorraine's rapid rise as a teacher of reading skills and as a teacher's teacher. Her method based on phonics and a minimum of memorization makes it practical and fun for anyone to teach others to read and to comprehend what they read. Her book is wonderfully useful for anyone, from home schoolers to professional teachers.

4.0 out of 5 stars fun teaching method for phonics, June 1, 2009

I actually ordered another phonics program ($65) to evaluate alongside this one and ended up returning the other because it was difficult to follow. This book is easy to understand and the story method of presenting phonics rules is fun for the teacher and the student. She makes it clear that this book is a launching pad, which is why I give it 4 stars. I had to get other materials to have enough words to use for practice with my students. The concept of the method is to turn the phonics rules into silly stories that students can easily remember with simple illustrations. For example, "c" is a copy cat who copies the sounds of "s" and "k" under certain conditions. I like to illustrate the phonics rule in my student's primary journal composition book on the top half of the page, and then write down a lot of words that use the rule below the picture. Then I have the student diagram the words and practice reading them. I have some video tutorials on youtube illustrating her method of presenting the phonics rules. My channel is taskwhiz .

This book has been instrumental in assisting me to teach a 42 year-old to read. The guidelines are concise and allow me flexibility in the design of my reading program.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very useful and mightily entertaining. A star of a book., August 21, 2011
First of all, I must praise the author for filling a huge need in this area of teaching someone to read. The book is a marvel, well-written, clear and to the point. The author knows her business and understands in excellent fashion how to get her ideas across. I read it with pleasure and amazement that such a subject could be described for anyone's use, and so entertainingly.

A special education teacher for many years, I have little patience for methods materials that require hours upon hours of wading through thick manuals and books and boxes upon boxes of materials to learn how to use them. This book is such an easy read, it's suggestions and techniques are so easily adapted to a classroom of students with disparate abilities, it thrills a teacher's heart. I've never been very good at teaching phonics, but I can guarantee that I'll do a much better job in the coming year.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Treasure, March 10, 2011
This review is from: You Can Teach Someone to Read; A How-To Book for Friends, Parents and Teachers (Paperback)
I am currently teaching an adult how to read and this book breaks down the rules of English. Once the adult grasps the rudiments of each letter and sounds then it opens a different world to the individual. This book frames each fundamental area that as a teacher you can quickly assess where the problem area is for the individual and teaches you how to teach someone to read.

The book arrived on time and in great condition. I am thrilled with it's approach for teaching adults learn to read or to read better. I recommend it highly to anyone who has an opportunity to do this.

5.0 out of 5 stars Reading Basics Made Easy!, January 26, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: You Can Teach Someone to Read; A How-To Book for Friends, Parents and Teachers (Paperback)
I am a reading tutor working with teenagers. Most of my pupils have gaps in their reading and phonics skills which have made their educational progress very difficult. This book has helped me target the areas where extra work is needed as well as giving me a good basic set of phonics rules to use in reviewing.
