I am torn how to rate this book. I have read all of Glenn's books and have attended 2 weeks of very intensive seminars, and know the preciousness of this book, but I'm not sure a newcomer can appreicate what they have. The colorful chart in the front and back inside along is countless hours of research and his been taught to doctors in professional type seminars. As Glenn might says, this chart alone is worth so much.

This book is a very detailed reference book, yet easy to understand, but please take the seminar if you have a chance. Go to iahp.org

If you want an intelligent child, this book is his best work. Not the how to teach you baby to read, or math or encylopedia knowledge.

This is my bible in terms of having to continue to refer to it.

My son at 2.5 yrs could run a mile. At 3.5 can swim independently about 20 yrs.

But more importantly, the physical program allowed his respiratory system to talk earlier and at 3.5 is doing silly poetry and conversation of a 5 yr old.

But even more important, is the neulogical development of his brain. The left right left right hemispheres talking as we talk our walks.

MAKE SURE THEY CRAWL! Don't be so proud of your kids that they walk so early on. Crawl crawl crawl. It is vital!

CAN THE STROLLERS! Your hurting your children. It's sickening to see a 3,4,5 yr old in those contraptions, while my 2 yr old is running.

I'm just not sure a casual reader would pick this all up from this very informative book, which I know the authors spent lots and lots of time on.

Good luck.

5.0 out of 5 stars Intelligent and vital, April 17, 2001
This is not a book about physical fitness! It is a tremendously important book about the relationship between physical development and brain development. I saw it work firsthand with my sister, who had a dyslexic problem. After our parents applied the techniques and principles in this book (as well as the other books by Glenn Doman), she had no trouble reading at all. Her speech and coordination improved, as well. She is now an editor, and attended Oxford University (Hertford College) as a Literature major. If all parents read this book, there would be no more "ADD," no more" dyslexia," and no more flat-headed babies wearing $5,000 helmets. If you are expecting, or if you have a young child, read this book!

This review is from: How to Teach Your Baby to Be Physically Superb : Birth to Age Six (More Gentle Revolution) (Hardcover)
Years ago, Glenn Doman was a pioneer in research on dyslexia and brain processes. It was through Doman and Delcato's work that the need for crawling to activate the right and left hemispheres was discovered. Since the 1960's education and research has come a long way from there, but the basic ideas have not changed, and Glenn Doman has held to his theories with religious fervor! While I would not want my child to attend his school or go as far as showing them Gray's Anatomy before the age of 7, (the children at his school never seem very happy to me) I can easily recommend THIS book without reservation. It has all the relevant information for you to take or leave as you wish. It demonstrates how simple activities that all children delight in (and already DO when left alone) are actually exceptional tools for brain development. And, it isolates and explains the ones that have the most powerful effect.

This book helps parents understand the role of these natural inclinations as it shows them how to encourage and assist the child by creating an environment where its instinctive movements and curiosity can be followed through safely. This is invaluable at the very time now believed to be most crucial to the development of a child's quality of life.

Whenever a friend or relative has a baby, this book is my first gift to them. The ones who try the exercises tell me they notice a positive difference in their child almost immediately (in areas of comprehension, coordination and overall intelligence). It has clear and colorful diagrams, development timelines and large pictures. It will be necessary to get past Doman's zeal if that kind of thing turns you off, but if you take what you like and leave what you don't, this book will prove itself invaluable.

5.0 out of 5 stars THIS BOOK WILL CHANGE YOUR LIFE!!, October 14, 2002
This review is from: How to Teach Your Baby to Be Physically Superb : Birth to Age Six (More Gentle Revolution) (Hardcover)
My mother usd the Glenn Doman series with me when I was a baby--I was reading at 2 1/2 yrs. old--not just kids' books, but the newspaper, or the Bible...!! In 6th grade I was reading at college level, and now I am using the revised and expanded program to teach my 3-yr-old and 3-month-old how to read, do instant math, speak and read foreign languages, etc.... It sounds so absurd, but it's proven, biological fact--just think how much a baby's head grows over the first year of life!! They are born with enormous potential. The first six years of a child's life are CRUCIAL; either you can exponentially increase their inborn, natural genius, or you can start dumbing them down from birth. We all have the same genes as Einstein did--those of Homo sapiens. In the nature vs. nurture debate, Glenn Doman clearly reveals that in the case of intelligence, environment is everything!! Of course you want to give your kids the best start in life--for your future and theirs, you need to read this book!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Excellent Program!, November 10, 2003
This review is from: How to Teach Your Baby to Be Physically Superb : Birth to Age Six (More Gentle Revolution) (Hardcover)
I have read nearly all of the books in the Gentle Revolution Series and all of them are very pleasant and encouraging. These books are really only for those parents who want to make a tremendous effort on behalf of their children and who believe that their children are one of the highest priorities in life. These programs involve much time and enthusiasm on the part of the parent. I am using these programs with my son. At several days old he was holding up his head, 2 1/2 weeks he was rolling over from tummy to back, 5 weeks old he made his first scootching movement, at 2 1/2 months he was rolling from back to tummy, by the end of four months old he was creeping on hands and knees and beginning to pull himself up onto things. This is an amazing program and I plan to use the methods for any children I have in the future. I also did not follow the book 100% so I can only imagine that if I had I may have acheived even better results with my baby.

5.0 out of 5 stars Who cares what the sceptics think?, May 13, 2005

This review is from: How to Teach Your Baby to Be Physically Superb : Birth to Age Six (More Gentle Revolution) (Hardcover)
For those of you out there that believe the object of this book series is to "pressure" your children into becoming college professors you obviously are either not paying attention or never read the book. At NO time does the book suggest tying down your child to a chair and forcing him/her to learn to (read, arithmetic, etc...) In fact it clearly states the opposite to STOP immediately if the child is not having fun.

I believe instead that the main point of the book is to love and bond with your child (what more does a child want than Mommy and Daddy's attention?) And that the world is full of amazing wonderful things that he/she has the potential to do whatever he/she wants to do.

My father (using his own techniques - the daily newspaper) taught me to read at 2 years old and I remember (yes I remember clearly) that it was so much fun to read to Daddy about the upcoming union worker strike.

I don't care what career my child chooses.. I just want him to be happy and have the same appreciation for the world of knowledge that surrounds us.

5.0 out of 5 stars The body and the brain are tightly coupled, July 24, 2005

The main issue of this book is that mental and physical development of a baby are tightly coupled. Physically perfect body gives more blood, oxygen and energy to the brain which reinforces the development of the body, which is most obvious for ages up to 36 months.

The author splits the development of the brain and the body to seven stages depending on age, and gives methods and joyful exercises for a baby to be physically superb.

5.0 out of 5 stars You need to see it to believe it. How sad!, August 21, 2004

This review is from: How to Teach Your Baby to Be Physically Superb : Birth to Age Six (More Gentle Revolution) (Hardcover)
When we were once told man can fly, and go to space. Ignorant and negative humans laughed at the idea. When true love was able to be found on the internet, people laugh and mock the idea too. And so thank heavens not all humans are so negative and narrow minded, otherwise how would we see the human race be where they are today? My son, is now 26 months old, and by following what was suggested in the book, he is sure enough strong enough to support his own weight and brachiate the "monkey bar" on his own. He is also very proficient in running. I invite those with curious minds to come see the growing population of "Doman" families across the globe, quietly and surely participating in the "Gentle Revolution", with or without the help of the Institutes. We are a non profit, pro bono support group. Be very amazed at http://www.childbrain.org

1.0 out of 5 stars Give me a break!, July 9, 2002
By A Customer
Sure, I can go along with the idea of preserving and expanding children's natural proclivities and talents in order to teach them important skills in a fun way. I didnt need umpteen chapters to beat it into my head. However, I forgive the author(s) for this defensiveness. What is less forgiveable is that the author failed to address issues that I felt were important, like whether parents should use the infant sleep/crawl track in light of research showing that babies who sleep on their stomachs have a higher incidence of SIDS. Also, many of the activities depend on a babys ability to grasp. Only now, at 8 months old, can my daughter start to do some of the reflexive grasping and holding exercises. Moreover, my husband, who is a physician, advised me not to do those exercises even if our daughter were able to perform them. Apparently, little shoulders can become dislocated when too much stress is applied through pulling the forearm. Another complaint is that, although the authors profess to care deeply about the well-being of all children, the Institute they established will not supply contact information for other parents in your area who are interested in their approach unless youve attended its $1,000 seminar in Philadelphiathen, theyll give you a network. It seems that, were such committment authentic, the authors would have at least donated a little Internet space as a public sharing forum (such as a message board). I also have some other notes. First, I wish the authors would have addressed why it is that children universally seem to achieve the same physical milestones around the same time. Does this not argue that children have a natural physiological timetable? Should we not consider that nature may know best about when children should achieve certain activities? While the authors, I am sure, would argue that their method is simply about encouraging childrens natural capabilities, the underlying bias is clearly that faster is better. And yet, to date, it appears that available data shows no relationhsip between the attainment of physical milestones, so long as they fall within the normal timelines, and later IQ or achievement. If the authors had spent less time defending themselves about the basic premise that childrens abilities ought to be encouraged and expanded, and more time discussing issues such as the ones I raised, I might have given this bookand the approach in generala better review.
