for the beginner?,
By A Customer
This review is from: Teach Yourself C++ in 24 Hours (Teach Yourself in 24 Hours Series) (Paperback)
Not if you don't have compiler experience! The book is well organized, the author well known for his teaching abilities. However, the BORLAND TURBO C++ LITE compiler does not work, and will not work because it was put together in 1990 by BORLAND who will not support it, and as a matter of fact (this took me one week) NO ONE supports it. Its just too old. This is not the authors fault. SAMS publishing can't help, they just threw in whatever they found on the shelf. The source code saves much typing, but I find that you need experience in typing in code to find your own personal problems with typing in code, and recognizing what a semi-colon does, and so on. Just copying files and running the compiler won't create a programmer. You need to create your own programs; this creates experience. This book is a beginning. There are many more books by Jesse Liberty that I like better. I'll have a drink and toast all programming authors the day they get their programming books together and put a cd in with a proper compiler, or recommend which one to get., and where to get it. SAMS PUBLISHING owes me one!

This book is horrible,

This book is horrible. The compiler sucks and most of the programs won't work with newer compilers such as Microsoft Visual Studio. It uses old style. I am learning C++ currently in school and I bought this as a supplement, but I think I will just stick to my regular book

Every Thing About this book is bad,

This review is from: Teach Yourself C++ in 24 Hours (Teach Yourself in 24 Hours Series) (Paperback)
This is my first C++ book and I felt very dissapointed. The compiler provided in this book can't work at all.The tutorials were simple and easy to understand for the first few lessons. However, I get bored when comes to the middle part of the book, not to mention the rest of it. The author relates animals to his tutorials. I find that boring and in fact stupid. At least as a programmer and author ought to teach us something useful.

THE BOOK IS VERY WELL ORGANIZED. HOWEVER, THE COMPILER NEVER WORKED. I SPENT HOURS AND HOURS TRYING TO MAKE MY COMPILER TYPE "HELLO". FINALLY, I QUIT AND NOW I HAVE BOOK IN MY BOOKSHELF THAT NOBODY CAN USE. OF COURSE, I USED A DIFFERENT BOOK, AND THIS ONE WORKED FINE (DIFFERENT AUTHOR).

Pretty good, if you know how to program...,

This is a pretty good book, a comprehensive crash course i c++, it covers just about everything one need to get started with c++, but I think you'd better know object oriented programming before you start because it's really brief on some of the more complex issues. There's one bad thing with the book though, it is very clearly an adaption of the 21 days book. Sometimes they have forgotten to change references from days to hours and those sorts of stuff. Nothing major, but a bit annoying, and it gives the book a low budget feel.

I spent a small fortune in C++ books. This is the one that was worth the money. It's clear, its simple, it's complete. What else could you need?

Perfect for beginners wanting to learn C++,

This review is from: Teach Yourself C++ in 24 Hours (Teach Yourself in 24 Hours Series) (Paperback)
I was skeptical about a 24 hour book but it has sinced changed my mind. This book explains the C++ concepts in a very easy to understand way. You learn the vocabulary, syntax, and other issues that are important to get you started and you do not get other garbage that just confuses you. You should have some programming language experience in order to completely understand it but you don't have to know C. I would recommend this book to anyone that wants to get into C++. I was lucky to be able to use my compiler here at work so I have typed in all the example programs in gnu C++ on an HP UNIX system and they all worked. I didn't even open the disk so I can't tell you how the disk is but the information in the book is very satisfying for that first step into C++. Great for beginners.

Well written for the beginner but poor quality control,

This review is from: Teach Yourself C++ in 24 Hours (Teach Yourself in 24 Hours Series) (Paperback)
The author worked hard to generate this book and it would be a good introduction to C++ if the supplied Complier was any good and if the supplied CD SW matched the SW in the book.Following is a copy of a note I left on the McMillan site after getting to Chapter 14 of this book:.... I am terribly dissapointed with the quality of the above referenced book and with the non-existant support for it on your web pages. .. The SW on the CD hardly matches what is in the book at all... SW is mis-labled; not the same as in the book; in places it doesn't compile with the compiler provided and needs updating real bad.... So, assuming that you cared about your customers, I went to your download page and, after 2 years on the market, the SW available for download contains all of the original errors that were in the first release ... i.e., it hasn't been fixed. ... After two years! I am about to go to AMAZON.COM to warn your prospective customers. ... Your Quality Control simply doesn't exist. ... Why don't you have some readers beta-test this stuff before you sell it.

You should have knowlegdment of other computer language before read this book. The explanations are clear. This helps you a lot!I didnt know anyone who explain so good pointers and how C programmers manipulate memory. This is the best C++ book (I have 6 in my house)

Use only as a supplement,
By A Customer
This review is from: Teach Yourself C++ in 24 Hours (Teach Yourself in 24 Hours Series) (Paperback)
Only use this book as a supplement. If I had relied on this book solely during this semester, I wouldn't have made it. This book gets into functions too early and doesn't clarify it. Also the compiler sucks. Once you've got the basics down, this book is awesome as a supplement reference.
