Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

Teach Yourself Active Web Database Programming in 21 Days is a comprehensive guide to the collection of technologies offered by Microsoft for accessing data via Web pages. The book's four authors do an excellent job of taking the reader through the underpinnings of today's Web, although the writing from chapter to chapter differs a bit, no doubt a result of its team authorship. Assuming the reader has a general knowledge of Visual Basic programming, the book lays out the foundations of HTTP, Web servers, browsers, and page delivery through HTML and CGI scripts. The center of the book outlines three major Microsoft technologies: Active Server Pages (ASPs) based on VBScript; ActiveX Data Objects (ADO), for getting to databases and generating Web pages dynamically from data; and the new Advanced Data Connector (ADC) technology, which allows Web pages to access live data. Though they occasionally slip into advertising mode for Microsoft's solutions, the authors are careful to show why each technology offers distinct advantages for Web developers. They do a particularly good job at explaining the underlying architecture of each technology, and include careful diagrams. The book also contains reference material covering the properties and methods for the scripting objects used in each of the technologies presented. Simple source code snippets, as well as numerous screenshots, will help the reader throughout the book. Working examples for several data-driven Web sites are also included. A handy appendix with online sources for all the necessary tools rounds out the book. For Microsoft-based Web developers, this title will surely be a very useful tutorial and guide.

1.0 out of 5 stars Theory book only - don't try to put it to use, November 19, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Sams Teach Yourself Active Web Database Programming in 21 Days (Paperback)
The book is probably terrific for managers who simply want to 'read' about the technology. Don't try to put the examples to use though; you'll be quite frustrated.

I found that this book did NOT NEARLY meet the qualities that I have found in other Teach Yourself series books. Teach Yourself Visual Basic 5 in 21 days and Teach Yourself Visual Basic for Applications in 21 days were 100% better than this book.

Poorly written, not tested, not worth the money.

3.0 out of 5 stars Awesome web technologies destroyed by non-working examples, April 3, 1999

This book covers awesome web technologies; however, non-working created a lot of frustrations on my part and makes me wonder about the validity of the entire book altogether.

To the authors, try to test run your examples before releasing the book and its cd.

2.0 out of 5 stars Out of date, November 29, 1999
This review is from: Sams Teach Yourself Active Web Database Programming in 21 Days (Paperback)
This is a grate book, except for the fact that most of the examples do not work (even from the provided cd), and some of the controls referred to are out of date and some, no longer supported. The first half of the book is ok to get you familiarized with ASP and web based data access.
