Excellent examples of ASP Code using ADO,
By A Customer
This review is from: Sams Teach Yourself Active Server Pages 2.0 in 21 Days (Teach Yourself Series) (Paperback)
The book assumes that you can access a server that can execute ASP. I used Personal Web Server that ships with VB 6.0 on Windows 98. I typed in several of the examples in the first few chapters and all of the code works and is complete. I also downloaded all of the source code from this site. I set up the odbc connections as shown and the code from ch10,11, and 12 is flawless. I haven't completed the other chapters yet. The author illustrates the frontpage editor to build forms which will save a lot of programming time on real projects. I used frontpage express(the cut down version of frontpage) and it generates the same Java code found in the authors examples. I appreciate the use of real world examples as opposed to meaningless snippets of code in countless other books. I would like to thank the author for this terrific book.

Great book but a few errors,

This book is great, my website is much improved because of it but, in the coding examples there are many mistakes, After you read the book though you should be able to correct these. I also found it very simple to edit applications to create amazing databases and asp pages. I suggest this book for people who havde general knowledge of html. Check it out!

Not as good as the other Sam's books, but alright,

This book assumes that you know some HTML. I didn't when I started...This book feels poorly thought out and poorly proofread compared to other Sam's books. I also don't like the examples. I feel that when I get to the examples it should reinforce and clarify what I just learned. Instead I am often left confused as the author introduces new objects or features in examples then doesn't explain them until a chapter or two later.

Not bad, but could have been better...,

For an intro to ASP, I found it useful. An easy intro into an area that was initially daunting to me. However, I can agree with a lot of the comments made previously. Explanations of many examples are poor, and there are a few mistakes in some of the code.If you're up on your VBScript, look elsewhere, if not, learn it first. I wouldn't go as far as asking for my money back, but if you're looking for the perfect intro to ASP...it 'aint it !

DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK.,

I had numerous problems with trying to run the sample programs, even though they were run directly from the authors web page! The author never returned my calls or emails for help! Also, I had to request for my money back, because there was absolutely no support from the author, Sanjaya, who seems to spend more time on ballroom dancing then on writing good books.

I read as far as mid-Day 2. I was so confused by the poor writing, I wrote and asked for a refund. I would guess he knows the subject, but how did this thing get beyond the proof readers? I'm looking for another book on the subject.

Well organized, wide coverage, starts from grass root, good for the beginners. Touches many subjects, but not enough explination. Still a very good book.

Yes, for me it worked, For me it worked like any thing. After around 14 days I completed the book and i could start with my work on ASP's. Only thing I found which is bit anoying is the Javescript used. Yes, always you have to use Java at the client side but it was good to know from the book how to do the same with VBScript as it was a book for teaching VBscripts not Javascripts. Any how, I rate it as a good one.

Good Information. Bad Code.,

I have only gone through the first few days of this book thus far, and I find that none of the vbscript works. I am not sure as to whether or not you need to have Windows NT, or not. It seems that FrontPage 97 or 98 will not accept much VBScript. I know the author cautions readers that FrontPage won't do much in the way of ASP, but give me a break! It won't do anything as far as ASP is concerned. I sent an e-mail to the author, and I am currently awaiting a reply. My overall analysis of this book is that it has some good information about ASP for novice programmers, but this book needs an accompanying CD that can provide an environment to play around in, because FrontPage just doesn't cut it.
