About the Author

Carla Rose started her photography career at the age of eight with a Brownie Hawkeye. A graduate of the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, she was a TV news photographer and film editor, as well as an advertising copywriter and graphic artist, before discovering the Macintosh. She wrote all or part of about 30 computer books, including Maclopedia, Adobe InDesign for the Mac, Sams Teach Yourself Digital Photography in 14 Days, Scrapbooking with Adobe Photoshop Elements 3, The Whole Mac, Managing the Windows NT Server, PageMaker 6.5 Complete, Sams Teach Yourself Digital Photography and Adobe Photoshop Elements 3 All in One, Mac Online, The First Book of Macintosh, The First Book of PageMaker 4 for Macintosh, It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad Mac, Turbocharge Your Mac, and Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About the Mac. I didn't know anything about Photoshop so I found this book very helpful for someone like me, who needed to learn step by step, slowly at my own pace. It was a book that was recommended by the photography teacher at Santa Monica City College. Since I dropped the course for lack of time, I decided to try on my own and I found that with each chapter I learned something new.
No book will be perfect, but I think if you have no background in Photoshop, or a minimal background, this book will teach what you the basics before you go on to the more advanced moves.

I am a fairly serious amateur who has used Photoshop CS2 for more than a year and used Photoshop Elements for a couple of years before that. Most of this book applies to CS2 as well as CS3, but much of it does not apply to Elements. I learned a lot from this book. The information is clear and neither talks down to you nor expects you to be a Photoshop geek. No book could ever cover everthing in Photoshop, but this one covers most of the important concepts in a way that is easy to understand and very useful. My only complaint is that I wish there were more in-line color pictures. There is a section of color plates in the middle of the book, but those in the text are all black and white. I suppose that helps keep the price modest, but it is sometimes a problem. Nevertheless, I think most Photoshop CS2 or CS3 users would find a lot in this book that they don't already know. I have serveral books on Photoshop, and this is one of my favorites.
