Is there authoring beyond Netscape Composer.... I think so,
By A Customer
This review is from: Sams Teach Yourself to Create Web Pages in 24 Hours (Teach Yourself in 24 Hours Series) (Paperback)
I'm 16 and I'm a beginner. I've experimented with free WYSIWYG programs like frontpage express and netscape composer and this book didn't really teach me anything I already knew from playing around with these web page editors. Th reason I was flexible and gave this book 3 stars is because this book could be useful for those that are ABSOLUTELY cluless. Say, for example, my mother. But if you're the beginner that has played around with composer or fromtpage and know the basics, then find something else. I was looking for a book to help me create a really cool website and this one didn't really do it (I returned it at the store I bought it). The best page you'd make with this book is a typical geocities/tripod "All About Me" Page. Besides, this whole book is only about Netscape Composer and there' much more out there than that. My suggestion, I now have The Dreamweaver 2 Bible which came with a trial copy of Macromedia Dreamweaver, flash, and fireworks, and it's great for the person who wants a more interactive fun site.

I was clueless!,
This review is from: Sams Teach Yourself to Create Web Pages in 24 Hours (Teach Yourself in 24 Hours) (Paperback)
From an earlier review: <<this book could be useful for those that are ABSOLUTELY cluless. Say, for example, my mother.>>Had to laugh; that's me! I've got grandkids this kids age. I checked this out at the library, renewed it twice, and had to HAVE it. I especially liked that it's equally good for Macs and those others. This got me through getting my first web site up and running -- I don't intend to use it for marketing or anything else high traffic. This book gave me everything I needed as well as some pointers about how to go further if I ever want to.

I learned so much from this book!,

Since I had Netscape Composer already, I was thrilled to find such a great book that focused exclusively on it. I learned an immense amount very quickly, and now have my own site up and running. This book taught me the basics of web design, and now I am ready to move on to a highter powered WYSIWYG and to hand coding HTML.

in 24 hours or even far less,

This review is from: Sams Teach Yourself to Create Web Pages in 24 Hours (3rd Edition) (Paperback)
This is a great book to learn how to create your own website. It teaches you all the basic skills in 24 chapters of 1 hour each. However, if you have any basic knowledge of MS office programs, you can do each chapter in about 30-45 minutes. Also, because of the rational order of the chapters, you do not have to wait for the last chapter before you can start creating your own web pages. The Dutch version that I was using came with FrontPage Express on the accompanying CD-Rom and even though my website is by this time already 8 megs, it is still the program I am using instead of the very expensive full version of FrontPage. So this book was awfully good value for money. And making a website is real fun, so try it!

Good book for beginners,

This books is a great book for those who are new to web page creation. While it doesn't insult the intelligence of seasoned designers, it does a great deal in building the confidence of those who want to try their hand at making web pages. I doubt that a person can become a web page designing expert in 24 hours, and you will probably spend more than 24 hours if you follow the letter of this book, but there is a wealth of knowledge in the text. This books is a great resource - it will make you think twice about spending money for web design programs when so much creation can be done free on freeware.

I bought this book because I wanted help working with Netscape Composer. The reviews indicate that this book focuses on this shortware. Unfortunately, the Second Edition (1999) does mentions Netscape Composer twice and includes ONE page discussing Composer. The rest of the book deals with use of FrontPage Express. I'll be returning this disappointment.

I find this book very helpful for someone who has not ventured into Web creation as yet. It gives pointers on how to put your site together, alerts you to the fact that "not all browsers are the same" and you need to be diverse in what you produce. The references and glossary are very good. I would highly recommend this book to get your site started. When you have gotten your feet wet, then you can move on with confidence to more high-powered web building.

Should have been titled "How to use Netscape Composer",

This review is from: Sams Teach Yourself to Create Web Pages in 24 Hours (Teach Yourself in 24 Hours Series) (Paperback)
A good book but it was mostly about making web pages with one specific program, Netscape composer. Yet in explaining how to use the program (which it gives you on disc) you do learn a lot about web page making. It has a good section on HTML tags in the back. For beginners, this is a great book.
