5.0 out of 5 stars The Single Best Book for the Beginner
As a full-time computer trainer, I have reviewed nearly every book out there on the basics of HTML. Far and away, this book is the single volume you should purchase when you are starting out.

This book has a lot going for it. First of all, you can't beat the price. How many times have you spent $40, $50 or more for a less-than-ideal computer book? This one is...

3.0 out of 5 stars Good intro to HTML:
You may start as the absolute beginner, learn HTML, and prepare your own web site by writing your own HTML code with the help of this book. You only need a plain text editing program, which comes with every PC operating system as the standard supply. You may do the same by utilising the HTML generating graphical softwares. This book will help you to prepare your web pages...

5.0 out of 5 stars The Single Best Book for the Beginner, November 21, 1998
By A Customer
As a full-time computer trainer, I have reviewed nearly every book out there on the basics of HTML. Far and away, this book is the single volume you should purchase when you are starting out.

This book has a lot going for it. First of all, you can't beat the price. How many times have you spent $40, $50 or more for a less-than-ideal computer book? This one is really a bargain! When you buy it you'll want to get started right away. Be sure to check out the portion of the Introduction called "How to Use This Book." Based upon what you want to do, this section outlines which lessons to focus on and how to proceed.

The writing lives up to Mr. Oliver's promise of a "good-humored, plain-English, beginner-friendly style." The format of 24 one-hour lessons is easy to live with and increases retention of each topic. I especially liked that fact that Mr. Oliver doesn't teach you HTML in a vacuum. He includes great introductions to graphics, the art of web design, and interactive web pages, and web site maintenance and management.

This book is rich with examples, and each lesson includes a summary (very useful for reference later on), Q&A, a quiz, and activities. The quiz and activities are aimed at adults, so you won't feel like you just bought a college textbook. Give them a try. You'll quickly see how much you've learned from the quiz and the activities will build both your skills and confidence.

My students ask for book recommendations from me every day. Many times I have to tell them that the book they heard was so great is only good if you need a doorstop. That's not the case with Dick Oliver's book; I highly recommend this one to all my students.

5.0 out of 5 stars Move Beyond Web Building Software, May 24, 2000
This review is from: Teach Yourself HTML 4 in 24 Hours (Sams Teach Yourself...in 24 Hours) (Paperback)
I started creating web pages over a year ago with a web building software package. It seemed great until I wanted to expand my page and add new things. The software made it frustrating so I looked into HTML books and bought Sams Teach Yourself HTML4 in 24 hours. Now I am creating 99% of my webpages in HTML code that I write myself (No special software needed)and have total control on what I see and where it is placed. I am about to take an Advanced Web Page Course for a certificate and Sams Teach Yourself HTML4 covers everything needed for this ... course and more! This book is a must for anyone who wants to learn HTML who has No Experience with HTML and Web Design to start with!

5.0 out of 5 stars Best HTML book for everyone, May 3, 2004
By

This review is from: Teach Yourself HTML 4 in 24 Hours (Sams Teach Yourself...in 24 Hours) (Paperback)
I read this book a few years ago when I knew nothing of HTML and it was an amazing experience. I read this book in the car on a 14 hour trip and on that 14th hour, I was already an intermediate HTML programmer. The book is broken down into 24 chapters that are each very detailed and smooth. Reading this book was almost like watching a good movie. After every chapter, I found myself wanting more. It was very hard to put this book down because it was exactly what I needed. My goal was to understand the concepts of HTML and to make very good and detailed websites. This book does it all. After I read this book, I immediately pulled up a plain text file and started typing in some code. Within a few minutes, I already had a full-blown webpage with images, tables,a centered header, and even an e-mail form (that did not include any CGI). After every chapter there are questions and answers about everything that was discussed. That helped me understand everything more and kept me from getting lost. In conclusion, if you want to be on your way with making awesome websites, this book is worth the price and worth 24 hours of your time.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good beginner book., January 22, 2001

This review is from: Teach Yourself HTML 4 in 24 Hours (Sams Teach Yourself...in 24 Hours) (Paperback)
Pro's: Good for the person who has not touched HTML at all, but has the ability to learn outside the classroom. Explains things in very basic, easy to understand terms. Covers a wide array of topics.

Cons: Examples are quite basic. All web pages that you write are almost too basic in structure. The student will leave with a good conceptual knowledge of HTML, but not a good working knowledge. The book assumes some knowledge of graphics, but quickly glances over it. You might need Sams TY Photoshop5.5 in 24 hours for more.

From here: You need some desire to start creating web pages if you want to turn your knowledge into working talent. Also pick up a copy of a HTML refrence...like The Complete refrence, HTML second edition, Powell/ Osborn. When you have to create many pages...you'll need much more than the STYHTMLin 24 has to offer.

5.0 out of 5 stars A MUST for beginners!, April 28, 2000
This review is from: Teach Yourself HTML 4 in 24 Hours (Sams Teach Yourself...in 24 Hours) (Paperback)
When I first started with my interest in web design, I was a bit hesitant about it, because I didnt want to purchase a lot of books that would confuse me even more than I already was.

This book is a great tool, and although there are no advanced methods of html, if you are just starting, this is JUST what YOU NEED! I currently am a professional web page designer, and even to this day (2 years after buying the book) turn to it frequently for its tools. In my book, Sam again, gets 5 stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars great for beginner, July 6, 2000
This review is from: Teach Yourself HTML 4 in 24 Hours (Sams Teach Yourself...in 24 Hours) (Paperback)
This book is the first book i get for HTML. It's really good for beginner. It assumes you don't think any single thing on producing a web page and guides you step by step to what you need to know.

Another good feature of this book is that it also mentions what else you need to produce a more professional looking web pages. The authors teaches you basic graphic skill in Paint Pro Shop and even some animations in Animation shop.

It also has very good chapters on forms, tables, and imagemap. But the StyleSheet chapter is weaker.
Overall, at the price, you can get not only HTML, but also Graphic tutorial. This book is really worth to buy. If you are new to web, this is the book for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Guide for HTML starts!, April 10, 2000
This review is from: Teach Yourself HTML 4 in 24 Hours (Sams Teach Yourself...in 24 Hours) (Paperback)
I'm a professional web developer, and I got my start a little over a two years ago with a version 2 of this book. I still keep that book on my desk, so if I get stuck, all I need to do is reach over and look it up.

The new edition is even better, and I have that on my shelf too, right next to the old one. Its a great guide for people who have never made a website before, and people who need to get current on the w3c standard. The book teaches HTML mostly in HTML 3.2, but later in the book, it teaches 4.0 and I am now comfortable in both.

If you want to learn HTML, buy this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Best beginner's guide out there!, February 9, 2001
This review is from: Teach Yourself HTML 4 in 24 Hours (Sams Teach Yourself...in 24 Hours) (Paperback)
This is a fantastic guide for HTML newbies. It starts at the most basic point and gives you a foundation full of useful examples. Later in the book it has chapters to whet your appetite for more advanced topics. I bought this some time ago and although I don't need most of the information any more, I still keep it around for an easy reference book. If you are new to creating web pages, you can't do much better for a starting point.

I searched high and low, paid gazillions of dollars on books and courses, they are all tough, expensive and difficult. Sams Teach Yourself Html 4 in 24 Hours is the best book I found.
It's easy to understand, gets you everywhere you want in HTML, gives you a free loaded practice web site, and it's inexpensive. The author has done a superb job.
If you are already acquainted with HTML and want to delve into it deeper, I would not recommend this book. If you're just about to learn html, get this book! You don't need anything else, trust me, it's the best!
