Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

This guide to Microsoft FrontPage 98, the Web-publishing tool, covers a remarkable range of material: The author starts out with a primer on the Web and ends with advice on managing your site and adding interactivity by using forms and other elements. In between, you learn how to work with FrontPage templates; build lists and tables; link pages; add graphics and image maps; use Image Composer, the image editor that comes with FrontPage; add frames, sound files, video files, animations, Active Elements, such as marquees, and dynamic FrontPage components, such as hit counters. The author also teaches you how to publish your site to the Web, enable style sheets, use the spell checker and thesaurus, track hyperlinks, edit HTML, and apply FrontPage Themes. The book features plenty of design tips and includes a reference guide to HTML 4.0. There are 24 lessons, each representing an hour of study, that combine step-by-step instruction, screen shots, and explanations. Each lesson ends with questions and answers as well as suggested activities for furthering your knowledge of the subject at hand.

1.0 out of 5 stars Learning FP 98 while debugging the book! Forget it!, June 4, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Teach Yourself Microsoft Frontpage 98 in 24 Hours (Teach Yourself...) (Paperback)
I wish I checked the review of this book before spending money on it. I've barely started working throught the examples and have run into descrepencies between the listings shown in the book and the results from FP. As a beginning FP user, trying to debug the book while learning is way too frustrating. Unless this author provides a way of updating this book (how about his web site? I didn't find it there!!) Andy Shafran will become a black listed author! Don't buy books full of errors! No credibility!

5.0 out of 5 stars Very well written technical book, July 31, 2000

This review is from: Teach Yourself Microsoft Frontpage 98 in 24 Hours (Teach Yourself...) (Paperback)
This author really knows how to write well! So often technical computer books read like a cookbook. This book is one of the best. It gives you a basic overview of FrontPage. The author knows how to discuss relevant material and leave out the unnecessary. His judgment here is excellent. It will have you up and using FrontPage right away. Plus you won't fall asleep trying to read it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Macmillan Is To Blame, June 30, 2000

If you go to the author's website ... he explainshow he wrotethis book in six weeks using an alpha version. Of course there wereerrors, but despite his repeated attempts to get the publisher to correct the mistakes Macmillan refused. They went on to publish this good but flawed book for four reprints, never fixing even one typo. For a while Mr. Shafran had a support site to help people with the mistakes, but has since taken it down as his relationship with Macmillan has soured. I suggest contacting Macmillan's Support Page ... for help or to complain about this product.
