About the Author

In 1982, Dan Gookin bought his first computer although couldn1t afford the disk drives, a printer or even word processing software. He vowed to learn as much as he could to justify the purchase. Eventually, Dan upgraded his computer and wrote several short stories for his local San Diego computer magazine, Byte Buyer. In 1985, Dan was hired as a technical researcher for Compusoft Publishing in San Diego. By 1987, Dan was writing books for major publishers. In 1990 Michael McCarthy from IDG Books had a great title for a book,DOS for Dummies, but no author to write it. Dan had an outline for a book called The Idiot's Guide to DOS, based on the old Volkswagen Idiots Guide that had been rejected by almost every major computer book publisher. McCarthy hired Dan and DOS for Dummies became an international bestseller. To date, Dan has written over 50 books on computers. He mixes his vast knowledge of computers with a unique, dry sense of humor. His favorite quote is, "Computers are a notoriously dull subject, but that doesn't mean I have to write about them that way." Dan and his wife Sandy write books together, run the local community theatre, and raise their four boys in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho.

More About the Author

Dan Gookin has been writing about technology for over 20 years. He combines his love of writing with his gizmo fascination to create books that are informative, entertaining, and not boring. Having written more over 120 titles with 12 million copies in print translated into over 30 languages, Dan can attest that his method of crafting computer tomes seems to work.

Perhaps his most famous title is the original DOS For Dummies, published in 1991. It became the world's fastest-selling computer book, at one time moving more copies per week than the New York Times #1 bestseller (though as a reference, it could not be listed on the NYT Bestseller list). From that book spawned the entire line of For Dummies books, which remains a publishing phenomena to this day.

Dan's most popular titles include PCs For Dummies Word For Dummies, Laptops For Dummies, and Droid X For Dummies. He also maintains the vast and helpful Web site, www.wambooli.com.

Dan holds a degree in Communications/Visual Arts from the University of California, San Diego. Presently, he lives in the Pacific Northwest, where he enjoys spending time with his sons playing video games inside while they watch the gentle woods of Idaho.

3.0 out of 5 stars Light, fun, efficient and understandable!, June 8, 2000
This review is from: Sams Teach Yourself Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional in 24 Hours (Teach Yourself -- Hours) (Paperback)
Gookin presents Windows 2000 Professional in such a way that the reader will remain interested in learning all the necessary skills to navigate and employ this OS successfully. It holds your hand as you explore the Desktop, the Start button, and teaches you essentially what all those gadgets do and how to change things to work your way. The easy way. After all, isn't that what a good OS is for? - This is not for advanced users or MCSE candidates. If you dread reading technical books, this is for you!

3.0 out of 5 stars For the novice Windows user, May 9, 2001
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Sams Teach Yourself Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional in 24 Hours (Teach Yourself -- Hours) (Paperback)
This book is definitely for the novice. Newcomers to Windows operating systems will find it helpful in basic tasks such as the Start Menu, windows explorer, etc., but do not look for detailed information on just about any topic here. Even where help is offered, it is scant, as in the example of removing an icon from the task bar tray: one specific example is used, with no reference to the general topic of how to access and/or close task bar tray icons in general. For someone new to Windows, this book could be a good value, inasmuch as it walks the user through elementary tasks. For the intermediate to advanced Windows user looking for somewhat more detailed explanations of the 'how' or 'why' of Windows 2000, look elsewhere.

Dab Gookin's 'DOS For Dummies' was great ... way back when DOS was hot. This Windows 2000 book it writen the same. I expected a more in depth look at things. Definetly not a book if youwish to go for the MCSE 2000 Track.
