Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

Traditionally, books about computer operating systems are exceedingly dense. Packed with jargon and too-small, inadequately explained screen shots, these books intimidate more than a few new computer users. Teach Yourself More Windows 98 Visually breaks from convention and puts images of the computer screen at center stage, explaining screen shots with clear, succinct prose.

This book shows how to use some of the more powerful and specialized Windows 98 accessories, such as the Character Map and the Phone Dialer. Ruth Maran and her staff, who have put out a whole series of excellent books like this one, do a very good job of showing how to customize the Start menu, a perpetual nuisance for many users. They also show how to convert a hard disk to the faster, more efficient FAT32 file system. Later chapters deal with dial-up networking and various built-in Internet applications.

Since this book includes a summary of the fundamentals of the Windows 98 user interface--clicking, dragging, and the like--users with a little bit of experience will find this book suits them well. Absolute neophytes may want one of the more basic Windows 98 books in this series. --David Wall

5.0 out of 5 stars Colorful and Helpful in Times of Strezzzz!, July 25, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Teach Yourself More Windows 98 VISUALLY (Paperback)
After buying several other computer books about Window 95 and 98, I was greatful to stumble across this book. MS Windows is great in many ways, but frankly I am having more than my share of problems understanding this whole system. This book takes me by the hand and gently walks me through a number of tasks that would otherwise leave me a bit baffled. I don't recommend it as the only book; Windows 98 for Dummies has been a good companion, but this book is long on colorful pictures that, imagine that, look just like my computer screen. The pictures tell the story and text is limited to just the facts you need to click the mouse and move on. If you recently purchased Windows 98 and have questions, I recommend this book.

Not having a great knowledge of computers can be frustrating, this book explained and identified things in a way that made it easy to comprehend.I just recently started college and being older I was very apprehensive about my computer classes. After reading this book I checked out several of the other books in this series and now I feel very comfortable in front of my computer. This entire series is excellent, I suggest buying them and keeping them for reference.
