I have found the "teach yourself" series of books to be helpful in all subjects, especially Nepali. Nepali is not an easy language to learn! My boyfriend is from Nepal and I got this book to become more involved with the conversation that is going on while he is speaking to his friends and family. Belive me, the audio tapes make a big difference. Hearing the language makes it easier to understand and pick up certain words and phrases. I think this is a good start for learning Nepali!

Ok-so am I proficient in Nepali? NO! Did I learn some vocabulary words? Yes. Did I come to understand some grammar? Yes. And I guess that is what I got most from it-- that when I hear others speaking Nepali, I can pick out a few words that I know--whether they are talking about themselves, or someone else. And that can be important sometimes. This is not a book that you read, it is one that you study. It takes alot of committment if you actually want to learn it because it teaches you to write the letters also (which I did learn). I am sure if anyone can try to devote some time to it, you could learn it pretty well--it is well constructed. And the TAPE...well that was the most important so you can understand the pronunciation.

I served in the Peace Corps in Nepal for over two years and am proficient in Nepali. This book is my choice for taking beginners to the next level (as it did me). For beginners, however, this book could be a little confusing. If you're just going to Nepal for a relatively short vacation, I recommend you get a phrase book and memorize key phrases.

I picked up this book before I studied abroad in Nepal, and I found it difficult and confusing. After I went to Nepal, and became quite proficient in it, I found it a useful tool for practicing my Nepali so that I don't completely lose what I learned in Spring 2001 in Kathmandu.
