5.0 out of 5 stars An Essential For New Designers
When I decided to design a web site for my company Bad Monkey Productions, I wanted to use code rather than relying on software. I had absolutely no experience with computer language or code and was understandably intimidated. Laura Lemay's book rescued me. I receive many compliments on my site and I owe it all to this book. It was the perfect guide when I was a...

1.0 out of 5 stars Terribly outdated design advice, July 20, 1999

This review is from: Teach Yourself Web Publishing With Html in a Week (Teach Yourself in a Week) (Paperback)
While I admire Ms. LeMay's writing style, I am afraid that her approach to web page design is terribly outdated. This book focuses on creating what David Siegel would call "first generation" web pages; i.e. simple, flat layouts on gray backgrounds, with very little visual appeal. Her advice on which tags to use (<Hx>, <EM>, <STRONG>, <HR>) only reinforces how out-of-touch she is -- no one codes like this anymore. Where is the coverage on how to layout your pages using tables and frames? Where is the advice on using the <FONT> tag to gain greater control over your typography? Every screen-shot in this book looks like something from 1995 (that's a LOOOOOOONG time ago in web years!). There is nothing here that can't be found for free on the Web, in one of those online HTML for beginners guides.

If you want your web site to look like a relic from the dawn of the Web, read this book. If you would prefer to have modern, professional-looking web pages, I recommend "HTML Publishing on the Internet" by Brent Heslop, followed by "Creating Killer Web Sites" or "HTML Artistry".

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Beginners Book, November 23, 2005
This review is from: Teach Yourself Web Publishing With Html in a Week (Teach Yourself in a Week) (Paperback)
This book is fantastic for the individual who wants to learn HTML quickly. Although it does not delve into the advanced topics too far, it is a good starting point. Lemay's style is straight forward and will have you writing web pages in no time. With this book and CGI 101/102 you could be designing and programming for the web in a basic capacity in a week, but by no means stop there!

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Start to Learn HTML from Scratch, June 21, 2000
By
This review is from: Teach Yourself Web Publishing With Html in a Week (Teach Yourself in a Week) (Paperback)
This is an excellent book for the person who wants to learn HTML but has no prior experience in Web Publishing. I read the majority of the book in one weekend and created my first website! The book gives you the basics to create a usable and stylish website. If the user wants more interactivity on their webpage, they will have to go somewhere else, but this is a good start. The book does teach frames and tables which is important for layout. I recommend this book to the novice Web Publisher.

Extremely well written and well organized. I wanted to brush up on my HTML knowledge and found a lot more. However, I am trying to figure out why did the author take such an anti-Microsoft stand? They do produce the second most popular browser ...

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic! It wasn't that hard at all!, August 21, 1998

Thank you Ms. Lemay for explaining so clearly the heiroglyphics of the 21st century. I was struggling to even understand the anatomy of a webpage, let alone the language and within a week of purchasing this book, I had my webpage(s) up and running. One of the best instruction books I've ever purchased. If there were 6 stars, you'd get them.
