5.0 out of 5 stars Still the best book to learn about TCP/IP, May 16, 2001
By
This review is from: Teach Yourself TCP/IP Network Administration (Paperback)
Unlike most computer books, this one is not dated although it was published in 1998. It provides the best explanation of subnet masking--making that concept intuitive. Other books don't present concepts/rules in such a clear manner. It will take more than 21 days to read through this book, since one day's worth of material can take longer to digest. This isn't a book you simply read and skim through the exercises. Take the time to do the exercises and you will know this subject better than you thought you could. If you're being handed an IP network to manage and you need to learn IP quick, buy this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stupendous, November 29, 1999
This review is from: Teach Yourself TCP/IP Network Administration (Paperback)
I have read at least a couple of dozen "computer books" in the last couple of years including a half dozen MCSE books. Despite its somewhat uninspiring title and cover it is without doubt the best one. I read another Sams book once (VB5) and wasn't particularly impressed. But this one, when i picked it up I knew virtually nothing about IP; I wrote the exam (well, a little more than 21 days later) and scored 94%. Besides being accurate, it is very well written, and doesn't come with the whimsical overhead of many like books. The only criticism I would have is that 2 of the chapters (on WINS and NBT, if I remember right) were written by different authors and had a lot of overlapping and in some cases slightly conflicting information.

5.0 out of 5 stars A clearly structured and very well written book about TCP/IP, April 25, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Teach Yourself TCP/IP Network Administration (Paperback)
As a reader from non-English speaking country (Taiwan), I found the book very well written in English. Statements in the book are very clear and concise, and this can help you have a firm grasp of the concepts about TCP/IP.

Though I passed the Microsoft 70-59 TCP/IP exam with flying colors (234 higher than the passing score), when I read this book, I realized that there were still a lot of things regarding TCP/IP for me to learn. This book covers more than the so-called 'Microsoft TCP/IP'. In fact, Microsoft TCP/IP is only a subset of the book. This book covers UNIX TCP/IP, NetWare TCP/IP, Firewalls and Security, NIS, NFS, IP over ATM, Voice over IP¡K etc which you will basically not see in the Microsoft TCP/IP books. This book can help broaden your horizons about TCP/IP field.

I am deeply impressed with the ¡¥Applying What You Have Learned¡¦ Section in the end of each ¡¥chapter¡¦ (or you can call it ¡¥DAY¡¦ in this book). These sections cover several questions to test your knowledge, and most important of all, you can find detail answers to each of the questions in the end of the book.

My point is slightly different from the previous reviewer, rperreaux, who says that this book will help you successfully pass the Microsoft TCP/IP Exam. In fact, Microsoft TCP/IP is not the major part of this book, and for this reason you could only find ¡¥general¡¦ information about Microsoft TCP/IP, but not ¡¥guide¡¦ information or 'tips' for you to pass the exam. If you are preparing for the Microsoft TCP/IP exam, try to find another TCP/IP book written for the exam, and use this book as a second reference book or for summary information.

This book has errata at http://www.mcp.com/info/0-672/0-672-31250-6/, be sure to have a print copy of it before you read this book.

To sum up, this book is a very good reference about TCP/IP, and if you want to know more about TCP/IP , this book is no doubt one of your best choices.

Rui-Di Chu (Freddy), MCSE

5.0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and challenging, April 3, 2001

This review is from: Teach Yourself TCP/IP Network Administration (Paperback)
There may be a reason that Amazon dropped "in 21 days" from the title of this book... the topic is a complex one which demands more than three weeks of attention. Regardless of the title, this is still an excellent self-study course on the TCP/IP protocol suite. Rather than focusing on passing a now non-existent exam, the author masterfully leads you through the intricacies of TCP/IP on a variety of platforms, helping you develop valuable and portable skills.

Unlike other books which spend chapter after chapter on networking basics, this book has you deconstructing IP packets on day three and subnetting on day six. The pace is unrelenting to the end, but it's worth the effort.

5.0 out of 5 stars Definitive Source for TCP/IP Network Admin for Windows NT, August 5, 1998
This review is from: Teach Yourself TCP/IP Network Administration (Paperback)
The book covers ALL facets of TCP/IP Network Adminstration on Microsoft Windows NT Servers and some bonus sections such as: Firewalls & Security, IP over ATM, NIS & NFS, just to mention a few.

The author has compiled his book in a way that could be considered a staple for any Windows NT Network Administrator's Library.

The book can also be used as an advanced study guide that goes over-and-above the requirements necessary to successfully pass the Microsoft TCP/IP Exam.

From novices to advanced network engineers, I strongly recommend this book is a MUST READ.

5.0 out of 5 stars A complex subject explained in a clear and concise manner!, March 20, 2001

This review is from: Teach Yourself TCP/IP Network Administration (Paperback)
Not only does this book explain all aspects of TCP/IP in an easy to understand format, but the author also mentions how it relates to both Unix and MS OS and contrasts the differences.

As a graduate student of Telecommunications Management, I could only dream to have professors this eloquent in all my classes. I bought this book as an alternative to one recommended by a prof teaching this subject. I have read this book and skimmed the one recommended by the prof - no regrets!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent choice for new and seasoned IT professionals., April 13, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Teach Yourself TCP/IP Network Administration (Paperback)
I found this book very well written and logically sequenced. It provides the reader with everything one needs to know about the TCP/IP protocol. All levels of readers, from the novice to the experienced professional, will find something of use it this book. MCSE students would be well advised to purchase book for reference use -- both during study and after graduation. Job well done Brian.
