Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Is it possible to learn any computer language in a week? Especially UNIX? Taylor gives it the old college try in this weighty book, which if nothing else will improve the strength of your wrists and forearms in seven days. Taylor tackles UNIX in 21 chapters and includes a calendar in the front cover to convince you that you will cover three chapters a day and survive. Each chapter explains the goals, summarizes your efforts, and quizzes you at the end (answers are provided at the back of the book). The massive amount of information provided in each educational unit is well organized, but the text, comments, and commands are nearly unreadable for tired eyes. Perhaps less information and a different physical format with kinder font choices would have produced a winner. This book might be better suited to those ready to tackle a specific topic at a more leisurely pace or as a ready reference for those new to UNIX.

4.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Reference!, March 9, 1999

This review is from: Teach Yourself Unix in a Week (Teach Yourself in a Week) (Paperback)
This book is great! I especialy enjoyed the section on vi. An extreemly helpful book, even though I've been using unix for almost 10 years, I learned some new tricks. I recommend it to anyone who needs to learn unix. My customers who need telnet access or wnat to have their own server for example. The only reason it didn't get 5 stars is that the author sometimes talks down to the reader. And his humor is too dry for my taste.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a bargain!, May 11, 2004

This review is from: Teach Yourself Unix in a Week (Teach Yourself in a Week) (Paperback)
This book teaches Unix fundamentals: commands, best practices, and a bit of history.

If you're familiar with Unix, you can read the chapters in whichever order you prefer; otherwise, read the chapters in sequential order as the commands, lessons, and techniques build upon one another.

To Taylor's credit, he teaches Unix while lowering its 'intimidation quotient'.

I highly recommend this book (especially for the price -- learn Unix on the cheap).
