5.0 out of 5 stars Urdu asaan nahin hai, magar yeh kitab achi se achi thi.
On the box it says that the goal of this book was to reach "all-around confidence". It did that and more. This book covers a variety of subjects while following the story of John and his wife Helen as they travel through several sites Pakistan and North India. There were even several situations and vocabulary words that they covered that I thought I would never need to...

3.0 out of 5 stars Flawed but still the best
This book is wildly overpriced. The Urdu typeface is not friendly to the beginner. There are many discrepancies between the written text and what is read on the CDs. It's too obvious that the speakers are reading. Needed more voices to be realistic. There are errors and inconsistencies in the transliteration. There is far too much English on the CDs.
Hower:...

On the box it says that the goal of this book was to reach "all-around confidence". It did that and more. This book covers a variety of subjects while following the story of John and his wife Helen as they travel through several sites Pakistan and North India. There were even several situations and vocabulary words that they covered that I thought I would never need to use, but found myself using in conversation shortly after. Also, the culture notes were a very nice touch as well. And as a Muslim I really liked the Islamic culture notes they brought up also.

I was 100% sure that the best way to learn a language was to be in a class all day, or immersion in the specific country, or among friends. This book proved me wrong. The content is difficult, especially after the 5th chapter because they remove the English transliteration and you are stuck reading the Urdu script and can only "cheat" by going to the back of the book. It seemed like every five chapters it got REALLY hard and seemed not gradual enough in the level of difficulty. But it took me three weeks to finish this book (I will admit, I should have gone slower) and after wards I was speaking and thinking in Urdu and the overall goal of "all around confidence" was definitely met.

That being said, I want to share the downsides, which are few. The errors that a lot of the reviewers talked about, I didn't notice until the last few chapters, and most of the students will probably notice this because by that point they are familiar with the Urdu script and it won't be a problem. Also, I learned Arabic script first from "Teach yourself Arabic Script" and "Very Simple Arabic Script" so I can't comment on their Urdu script introduction, which is needed for the rest of the book. You can't fake it past chapter five without knowing the script!

Finally, I would like to add that if you are *really* serious about learning Urdu, this is THE book to get, but still there is a long way to go. I *highly suggest* following up by getting "Urdu - An Essential Grammar" by Ruth Schmidt afterwards. I was so confident in Urdu after this "Teach Yourself" course but the Grammar book will make your realize that there is still a whole bunch more to learn and clear up the fuzzy spots. But overall, I very highly recommended "Teach Yourself Urdu Complete Course" very, VERY well done.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mere khayal se bhi hai ke vuh achhi chiz hai!, December 28, 2004
This review is from: Urdu (Teach Yourself) (Paperback)
I agree that Teach Yourself Urdu is excellent course for those wishing to learn the Urdu language. Although the course is centred around vocabulary and structures required by travellers, it provides an excellent start for those who would eventually like to learn more advanced Urdu. Concepts taught are constantly reinforced through the use of dialogues and examples, both of which serve to standardize the flow of Urdu in the learner's mind and to make the reader as comfortable with written Urdu as possible. I am at the tenth lesson in the 15 lesson book and can already recognize parts of headlines on BBC Urdu or even entire headlines. Bahut shukria TY!

4.0 out of 5 stars Boht acha!, June 19, 2000
I have been in the market for two years searching for just the right book. I have found it. It's professional produced and also incorporates the cultural aspects of the language as well. My only discontent with the book is you have to learn the written script as well in order to follow along after Chapter 5. I didn't learn to read and write English that way. Be forewarned if you just want to learn to speak Urdu.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best book available to teach yourself Urdu !, February 27, 2000
By
Thanks to both Mr Matthews and Mr Dalvi, learning Urdu has become accessible at last ! You will not find a better book. I am learning Urdu right now with the assistance of a Pakistani student and althought it is not so easy, this book takes the trouble to make everything so clear and simple.

5.0 out of 5 stars Kitabi bahut accha chizen hain (this book is very Good), June 15, 2004
By A Customer
This is a great book. Not only do you learn how to pronounce a word or sentence but you also learn how to read and write it. The book also gives you culture tips about Pakistan and India. It also show how to make up a sentences and the chapters are broken down by following a character's jounrney in Pakistan. If you know how to write in arabic you would find writing in urdu somewhat the same but if you don't know how to write in arabic don't worry, the book also show you how to wite the begin, middle, and end part of a letter. I find this book most enjoying and I highly recommend it to anyone who would like to learn this language.

4.0 out of 5 stars A very helpful book, March 11, 2001
By A Customer
I really like this book because it explains the grammar in a simple way and has good dialogues. But there are a few things that could be improved. One is the way they teach the Urdu script. I don't think they cover it so well although they use it alot in the book, also they don't teach you how to write it. It's not so easy when you actually try to make the words yourself. Also there is alot of emphasis on formal Urdu which is good to learn but they should also teach informal Urdu.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good for just a little more than beginners, October 10, 2004
This review is from: Teach Yourself Urdu Complete Course (Paperback)
This is a very good book for those who are just a little more than beginners. Although, with good concentration even a beginner can start with this book. I really needed to tie up loose ends on my Urdu grammatically and needed practice lessons. I wanted this book more for learning to read Urdu rather than learning to speak Urdu. Once you realize that word is the word you've been hearing or speaking then the light bulb comes on and you then recognize it after a little practice. My husband is Pakistani and when I was in Pakistan I learned a lot of Urdu but it really takes time and practice practice practice..even if they laugh at you..they do it with love :D Don't feel shy or embarrassed because remember this is not your first language...and in many cases not even your second :D Good Luck!

4.0 out of 5 stars Me gusta (lo que llevo leido), August 23, 2006
By
El libro está bastante bien. La clasificación de las lecciones es clara, las explicaciones son minuciosas y tiene diálogos con personajes simpáticos para ponerse en situación. Me gustan mucho los CDs, se escuchan bien y en poco tiempo empiezas a entender lo que dicen.
En contra: está en inglés, por lo que al explicar la pronunciación de cada letra es algo lioso. El tipo de letra cuando escriben en urdu es muy pequeña y veces no se distingue bien.

5.0 out of 5 stars A real complete book for learning urdu seriously..., July 28, 2000
By A Customer
If you want to learn Urdu seriously enough, this is a book for you. This book not only covered basic spoken Urdu for survival if you are a tourist in Pakistan, but also teach Urdu grammar and script. More.. it has hundreds words of vocabulary list at the end of the book. A real complete book of the language ... and I do not think I need to buy more book on Urdu language beside this one.. Okay, maybe if I want to learn more then 1000 Urdu words definitely I need a comprehensive Urdu dictionary beside this book :D
