5.0 out of 5 stars Very effective presentation, December 14, 2006
This review is from: Teach Yourself VISUALLY Chess (Paperback)
Most chess books for beginners are simply awful. It's quite refreshing to see a book like this. High resolution photographs of the board really make a difference. The writing is remarkably clear and free of jargon. Lots of great players unfortunately are ineffective teachers. Not so here. The author has his chess accomplishments, but more important he has taught the game for 30 years. It makes a difference and it shows.

What impressed me most is how far the book will take you. There are the usual basics. Some very effective sections on openings, middlegame, and endgame play, including a section on the five steps to victory that you won't find in any other beginner's book on chess. If you casually compare this volume to the other chess books for novices, you'll quickly agree that this is the way to go.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best overview of the entire game to be found, December 4, 2007

'chessguy' nails it -- Jon Edwards is a great teacher because of what he does not write. Leaving aside anything that does not get you up and running as a player with a clear understanding of the game's rules, tactics, and traditional strategies, this book is pure gold and betrays its simplistic visual "series" title. There's far more here than meets the eye. If you work your way through the book with a chessboard in front of you, it will go quickly.

As a beginner in 2007, I bought over 50 chess books. However, this book was the most helpful of all of them. If you're buying someone you know who's recently become interested in chess a book, Jon Edwards won't let you down.

This book is so easy to read, makes the concepts so clear for a beginner, I keep it at my side. Very well written. Every beginner should have it.

Very good product for beginners and those who have not played in a long time. You really need several books on chess, but this is a GREAT product.

Yes, this is a fantastic book to learn from. It's both easy to follow and fun to read. Every Chess book should be this visual.

It's also an amazing teaching tool.

I started a chess club at my son's middle school this year, and pretty much teach the kids straight from this book. Its short, informative chapters allow me to easily get across any idea I'd like to teach, from basic to more advanced.

If you've never read a Chess book before, if you fear dry, boring passages... try this book. It's fantastic.

5.0 out of 5 stars Commendable, March 20, 2009

I bought this book to improve my empiric-learned game after many years without practice. The book describes at detail the strength and weakness of openings, strategies and game closures. It is an excellent choice for beginners and people not so new in the game, very understandable for 2nd grade kid.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent for beginners, November 28, 2011
This review is from: Teach Yourself VISUALLY Chess (Paperback)
This book is fantastic for beginners! It covers the important areas of learning and is very basic. If you know the basics (how to move the pieces, notation, and basic strategy), this book may not entirely be for you, but if you're interested in learning how to play---this book is perfect

4.0 out of 5 stars CheckMate!, May 15, 2011
This review is from: Teach Yourself VISUALLY Chess (Paperback)
As a beginner into the game of chess, I was looking for a text that broke the game down into its easiest of pieces and allowed the player to develop at his/her own pace. This book does that.

Its pictures are a wonderful addition, especially for those adults (and especially children) who learn visually instead of through context. It explains moves, situations, and strategies and then shows actual pictures of a chess board to further explain the scenarios.

Lastly, it allows for growth as a player. This is not a weekend read that will leave you looking for more. It starts with the simple and finishes with the more complex. This book will keep you going for some time.
