About the Author

Janine Warner's expertise in media, technology, and cross-cultural business has taken her on consulting assignments from Miami to Mexico and speaking engagements from New York to New Delhi.
Since 1996, she has authored more than a dozen books about the Internet, including Creating Family Web Sites For Dummies and the best-selling Dreamweaver For Dummies (now in its sixth edition).
Her success as an author attracted the attention of Total Training, Inc., a pioneer in innovative video-based training, where she was first contracted in 2005 to host a video called Total Training for Dreamweaver CS2. Her first video won two industry awards and she is now working on a series of Web design videos that includes Advanced Dreamweaver CS3.
An award-winning journalist, her articles and columns have appeared in a variety of publications, including The Miami Herald, Shape Magazine, and the Pulitzer Prizewinning Point Reyes Light newspaper. She also writes a regular column on Dreamweaver for Layers Magazine.
Janine has taught online journalism at the University of Southern California Annenberg School for Communication and the University of Miami. In 1998, she joined The Miami Herald as Online Managing Editor. A year later, she was promoted to Director of New Media. She left that position to serve as Director of Latin American Operations for CNET Networks, an international technology media company.
Since 2001, Warner has run her own business as a writer, speaker, and consultant. She earned a degree in journalism and Spanish from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and spent the first several years of her career in Northern California as a reporter and editor. She lives with her husband in Los Angeles.

More About the Author

Hi, I'm Janine Warner, and as you might have guessed, my life revolves around the internet - teaching it, designing it, and always, always learning from it.

Because not everything you read on the Internet is reliable, you can expect that at least two of the following facts in my biography are completely made-up.

1. I'm a journalist turned geek. Sometimes I call myself a 'techy translator' or a 'digital alchemist' -- my favorite made-up titles so far. I imagine future generations will remember us the way we look back on Medieval wizards trying to turn lead into gold.

2. I was bitten by a radioactive computer bug, which gave me my amazing web powers... (Okay, that fact may not be from a reliable source.)

3. I started out as a reporter and editor and got hooked on the Internet early. Since 1996, I've written more than a dozen books, including Web Sites DIY For Dummies, Dreamweaver For Dummies (every edition), and Mobile Web Design For Dummies.

4. I've created and recorded more than 50 hours of training videos on Web design, Dreamweaver, CSS, and Expression Web for Kelby Training and Total Training. (You can learn more about my videos at DigitalFamily.com).

5. I'm fascinated by how mobile is changing the Internet and I'm now working on a book about designing for the iPad, iPhone and other touchscreen devices.

6. I spend most of my time running a consulting firm and writing books about Web design. I also travel all over the world for conferences and events and because I speak fluent Spanish, I've been fortunate to travel a lot in Latin America and Spain.

7. In 1998, I was hired by The Miami Herald, first as their online managing editor and a year later, as Director of New Media. I left that position to run CNET's Latin American operations in Miami. Since 2002, I've run my own consulting and writing business.

8. As a child, I trained my pet Siberian Snow Tiger to ski the steepest slope in the Alps, the dreaded Hannenkahm. Despite reaching speeds in excess of 80 miles per hour on the treacherous course, the Olympic Committee refused to admit him. (This point is so very, very true.)

9. I've taught courses in online journalism at the University of Southern California and the University of Miami and I've been a guest lecturer at more than 20 other universities.

10. I've served as a judge for several internet contests in the U.S. and Latin America, and in the course of that work, I helped create an Internet Literacy program for high school students in Latin America.

Warner takes a reader through an easy tour of Dreamweaver CS3. No previous exposure to it is needed. An added bonus, which is made clear by the narrative, is that you also do not need much background in knowing HTML. To some people who have never dealt with HTML, it can be daunting. What Dreamweaver does is make the composition of an HTML web page as painless as possible.

Typically, much of the book shows how to write a page in WYSIWIG. What you see is what you get. Click-driven and drag and drop. The grubby details of writing or inserting the appropriate HTML tags are largely (and thankfully!) hidden by Dreamweaver. So, for example, you can make line breaks in text, indent paragraphs, make ordered lists, and change text and page colours. All without explicitly editing HTML tags.

There are a few sections where you get to see (and edit) the raw HTML. Perhaps skip these on a first reading. With some experience in writing your first pages in Dreamweaver, you can later return to these.

The last chapter is definitely the most advanced. Talking about putting a database behind your website. The discussion is accurate. But it is only an introduction to the topic. For any realistic website with a database, consult a book devoted to the subject. Warner's writing touches on a few highlights. Enough to perhaps let you appreciate the complexities.

I find the "Teach Yourself Visually" books to be a great tool for those who don't know much about HTML and don't want to get bogged down with it. My first TYV book was for FrontPage and it had me up and going online in no time. The same is true for this book. I don't understand why someone would be insulted by this book. Anyone who is 'above' such a book, shouldn't be looking for this type of book. There are plenty of more advanced books with lots of words and stuff that won't have you uploading web pages for weeks. If you are looking for the best, most practical way to get going quickly on your websites, these Teach Yourself Visually books are the way to go. Yes, it's a 'Picture Book' for adults and you can't beat it.

Excellent guide to teaching yourself visually Dreamweaver CS3. Step by step instructions with visuals, guide even the most computer challenged person through building their own website with ease. In the education field, this is called task analysis.
