Teach Yourself Visually OS X Mavericks by Paul McFedries is an excellent introduction to the OS X operating system and its newest version Mavericks. At the Apple Applications store the reviews of Mavericks have not been stellar and many reviewers are saying the program is much worse than Mountain Lion, its predecessor, and is suffering from numerous glitches and crashes. Nonetheless, for those switching or new to the OS X system this book will introduce you to the most useful elements of the program in an easy and understandable format.

Teach Yourself Visually OS X Mavericks covers about every basic command needed to operate the OS X system. The opening chapter "Discover What You Can Do with OS X" introduces the novice to the Apple system and covers the big picture in getting to know Mac. It covers, in part, importing music, recording music, burning a CD, synchronizing with an iPod, iPhone or iPad and more. This chapter does not explain in detail how to accomplish each task, it just lets the reader know what the OS is capable of.

The following chapters tell the reader step by step how to accomplish basic tasks. In each instance the book shows the exact screen the operator will face and points to the area to click or type in to obtain the needed results. Each step in numbered so it is hard to go wrong. Under the heading "Organize Files with Tags" in chapter 9 the reader is told: 1. Click Finder in the dock, 2. Open the folder that contains the file you want to tag, 3. Click the file, 4. Click Edit Tags, 5. Type the tag (note: to assign multiple tags separate each one with a comma), 6. Press RETURN, OS X assigns the tag or tags, 7. Press RETURN. Plus, the screen for each step is shown with numbers for each action and where to click or type.

I'm upgrading from Mountain Lion to Mavericks and wanted to know all the new stuff. I don't stumble around looking for the new things. I get a book and learn how to use the new system and this book tells and shows you how to do it. I use the Teach Yourself Series for all my electronic gadgets. It's just technical enough to get you proficient, but not over whelm you in the process.

So you find yourself, maybe like I did, upset with Windows and buying a Mac. I did so several years ago, when Vista was their Operation System (O/S), and my first Apple O/S was Tiger. Since then, I've faithfully updated my Apple O/S through Leopard, Snow Leopard, Lion, Mountain Lion and, now, Maverick. Suddenly, in looking at the tasks I used to do, there seems to be new steps that I'm not aware of, and just a glance at iTunes shows Apple's done a number on it where it doesn't look anything like it ever did. As it turns out, the changes have been steadily coming, and I was contently doing the things I always did, for the most part, not realizing Apple's world has passed me by.

TEACH YOURSELF VISUALLY OS X MAVERICKS is an excellent book it that it takes one through each step of the process in doing something. It is, almost, impossible to not do it correctly. I say "impossible" because I'm sure I'll get impatient and jump a step in anticipation, but the steps are there, and they are easy to follow.

This book is also for you if are one who has just bought your first Apple Mac and need someone holding your hands through the process. It is not a book to tell you how to do everything, but it will get you more than started on using a Mac to its full potential. Realizing just how behind I am, I have bought a second book, OS X Mavericks on Demand, by Steve Johnson, as a companion piece, and I read them side-by-side as I learn how to do tasks, whether for the first time or a refresher course. This is not a trouble-shooting book, as those then to be more technical, and have less pictures.

I converted to Mac several years ago and find the hardware spectacular. Yes, call me captain obvious. The transition from Windows to OS X has been a little more problematic. I DON'T miss the constant crashing of windows and incompatibilities and virus risks. I do miss my years of familiarity with the operating systems, so needed something to help me take the baby steps needed to do the things that are a little less intuitive. Since a picture is worth a thousand words, I suppose this book replaces an entire library of explanation. It does feel a little silly needing to look at pictures at times, but it does provide a basic foundation to learning how to use your mac. I found the book to be well organized and laid out and very informative for the basics and a little beyond. My only note is that as a few others have noted, some of the photos are a little small for aging eyes. Highly recommended for beginners or those making the transition from windows.
