This book was a valuable companion to me as I wandered into the WordPress world with no experience at all. Like many people, I find it easier to work through a new program on-screen and not by reading about it. However, this book provided "screen shots" and entertaining graphics that led me through every challenge in setting up a WordPress blog. It gives detailed information in an easy to understand and to implement form. It made learning WordPress a fun and easy process.

"Teach Yourself WordPress Visually" is a book that is a good beginning point for someone who wants to start blogging but has little or no web experience. It walks you through the ins and outs of a basic Wordpress setup along with some screen captures to illustrate the points. This is purely an elementary level book and would be of little use to someone with more experience. Those expecting more will undoubtedly be unimpressed and/or disappointed.

As for Wordpress itself, I have found it an excellent choice for blogging. The emphasis here is more on that available at Wordpress.com but users with specific needs may wish to consider getting space from a webhost where you would have much more control. This is dealt with only passingly in the book albeit this is understandable given the overall purpose.

For those novices looking for a start with Wordpress, this is a very good choice. For more advanced users, you would probably be able to figure out everything in this book on your own and need a more advanced survey of the platform's capabilities.

I use WordPress on a domain that I purchased, and I've been writing and using it consistently for about nine months. Unfortunately, most of the advice/instructions in the book are things I figured out on my own, some easily, and some not so much. If you're getting ready to set up a blog and haven't started yet, I'd say this book is probably worth the time and money. If your blog is already up and running, though, most of this will probably not be new to you.

I considered many Wordpress books when choosing this one. I was very disappointed. It is very light, and didn't provide me with too much in-depth information at all. I don't consider myself a "programmer" by any means, so the description of this book as being for beginners was appealing. Plus, the "teach yourself visually" in the title also was alluring. Well, it's not good at all. The visually part is a bunch of bizarre drawings about the general subject matter and not screenshots of the actual WP application.
Sorry, cannot recommend this at all - i got very little out of it.

We recently set up our company blog using WordPress and I have to tell you that I purchased this book at the outset, and it it taught everything you could possibly need to know about setting up a WordPress blog.

It was worth every penny, and is a reference I use all the time when working with our blog.

The book is very well laid out, loaded with color examples and illustrations, and is super easy to understand. Each few pages explain how to do a particular thing with your blog, the index is comprehensive, and by first reading this book front to end, any WordPress newbie will be well equipped to launch out with a WordPress.com or a self-hosted WordPress blog.

In my honest opinion, this book was like taking a course in how to use WordPress. I read through the book in a few days, and was good to go. I wish the Visual Read Less - Lear More series included other subjects in their catalog as I was very impressed with this book.

I rate is a sold 10 out of 10 .. and strongly recommend it for newbie WordPress bloggers. Good luck with your blog.

First of all, I feel that a visual step-by-step guide like this suffers from the general flaw that, by the time the book comes out, the product's look and feel may have changed -- as it the case with WordPress.com. The book offers step-by-step tutorials on how to use WordPress through lots of screen shots. I find it generally useful, but often need to adapt to ongoing changes in WordPress' interface. Also, the book's layout is rather confusing and feels cramped, which kind of mirrors the feel of WordPress.com itself.

This is one of those books that really pulls you in. If you want to get a quick answer, you'll find it, but I challenge you to stop reading there. You will inevitably continue to the next topic and the next, learning new things on each page.

Here are five topics that I wanted to learn more about to optimize my WordPress blog:

* Keeping spam out of comments
* Implementing analytics for user tracking
* SEO (search engine optimization)
* Adding advertising
* Advanced formatting so video and images look clean on the page

The book delivered as advertised on all five points. For comment spam, there's a two-page spread describing how to activate Akismet. For analytics, there's a spread describing how to implement Google Analytics. For SEO, there's a spread discussing techniques to make sure search engines will do a good job with your content. Advertising gets three spreads, one for Google, one for Amazon Affiliates, and one discussing general issues. Several spreads also cover various issues with photos and videos.

But...There is one issue with this book: it's broad, not deep. You will have to go elsewhere to learn more than what a two-page spread can teach you about a given topic. The good news is, for most topics you won't need to look anywhere else. I didn't deduct any points here, because the book does such a good job delivering on the promise it makes on the cover: "The fast and easy way to learn."

Five stars for bringing nearly everything you need to know to use WordPress into one place. If you want depth, you'll have to go elsewhere, but this one covers the broad topic very well.
