Book Description

May 1991
From an ordinary pitcher, Steve Stone turned his career around to become a Cy Young award winner. How'd he do it? By concentration and meditation and determination. Plus a lot of other get-yourself-going tips he shares here. Learn from Willie Mays, Harry Caray, Earl Weaver, and dozens of other greats from major league baseball who have influenced Steve Stone.

This is not the typical motivational book. It's full of baseball lore, anecdotes and humor that will make it memorable for readers who care about their careers in and out of sports.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Keying in on the importance of being focused on the task at hand, former Major League pitcher Stone uses his baseball career to show how success can be attained. He credits meditation and mental imagery as critical factors in turning his pitching career around and making him a Cy Young Award winner. Interspersed throughout are additional guidelines for success, such as developing a positive attitude, doing away with excuses, having confidence in yourself, and being willing to accept failure. Interesting anecdotes about baseball personalities such as Harry Caray, Willie Mays, and Thurman Munson are mixed in with Stone's philosophy. Unfortunately, the sequence of events is difficult to follow, and at times baseball stories seem thrown in haphazardly, without illustrating a particular point. There is good information here, but, typical of many books written by athletes, it espouses the philosophy, "since it worked for me, it will work for everyone."-- Kenneth G. Tillman, Trenton State Coll., N.J.
