Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

Teach Yourself Windows 98 Visually relies on the principle that it's possible to teach a reader how to perform Windows 98 tasks with extremely few words, relying instead on copious illustrations (both screen shots and conceptual diagrams), labels, and efficient prose. This book succeeds in its mission; a novice with no computer experience will find this guide extremely helpful in unraveling the less intuitive parts of Windows 98.

Each spread begins with an attractive conceptual diagram that illustrates an abstraction; for example, a freeway overpass surmounts a twisting mountain path to demonstrate Windows 98 shortcuts. Then a series of screen shots shows what appears on your monitor as you perform the task. Lines and labels clarify the names and functions of key interface elements, while succinct captions explain what's going on. All the illustrations appear in full color, so what you see on these pages is what you see on your screen.

You'll learn all the key tasks here, including mouse manipulation, file organization, the use of the important Windows 98 accessories, networking essentials, electronic mail, and Web-page creation. It would be nice if there were some mention of full-featured productivity applications--no one really uses WordPad for serious work--but as a Windows 98 text, this book covers all the bases.

Like the more shallow but very similar Windows 98 Simplified (from the same author), Teach Yourself Windows 98 Visually represents the ultimate in Windows 98 hand holding. --David Wall

From Library Journal

MaranGraphics takes the picture-book approach to introducing Windows 98. Simplified is for the total novice. It is very simple, completely illustrated, and very clear and belongs in all public library collections. Teach Yourself and the Visual Pocket Guide focus on Window basics, file management, customizing Windows, optimizing your computer, browsing the web, exchanging E-mail, and working with channels. Neither book is deep, but both are very effective for those new to Windows 98; Teach Yourself may be best for libraries because of its standard rather than "pocket" size. Master Windows 98 Visually combines the visual approach with a comprehensive reference approach, covering just about anything you can imagine short of programming. This complete visual reference, with lots of discussion, belongs in computer labs and behind reference desks as well as in the stacks. Over all, a very well done series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Me, Dad & Mom, January 21, 2000
By
Steve Compton (Redmond, Washington) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Teach Yourself Windows 98 Visually: Read Less, Learn More (Paperback)
When my 80 year old Dad told me that he and Mom were going to "step up" and get a computer, I thought "Great! Now I can email them when they're in Arizona for the winter." The salesman, Ron, at Circuit City in Peoria, did them a great service by selling them a copy of "Teach Yourself Windows98 Visually". When I was down visiting, we started going through the book and I was very impressed how clear it was. I am a network administrator as well as resident instructor for our business and am accustomed to taking "screen shots" (Print Screen key) then pasting them into MSWord and adding instructional text boxes. This book not only does all that BUT MORE! I was so impressed with it, when we got home, I bought one for my family so they could expand their knowledge of Windows98...I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK!

I work in Computer Sales & Consulting. Most of my customers are buying a computer for their first time and need as much help as they can get. I always recommend Teach Yourself Windows 98 Visually. It's understandable and doesn't bore you with a lot of reading. EVERY Customer I've recommended this book to has come back to thank me. Telling me that "it's the best book" and how much it's helped them. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK!

5.0 out of 5 stars Sure cure for Windows 98 anxiety, June 27, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Teach Yourself Windows 98 Visually: Read Less, Learn More (Paperback)
OK, admit it, you threw caution to the winds, decided to get a life, live dangerously, took a dare, made a bet, suffer from insomnia, or simply experienced temporary insanity. Whatever the reason, you showed up at your local computer chain store for their version of a Windows 98 party. For those lost souls who actually went home and installed it the same night, well, check your local on-line self-help group. For the rest of us, the next morning brought sobriety and the terrible realization that now we actually have to install and even worse, begin to use Windows 98.

The Maran family must have anticipated this moment (just as they did with Windows 95) and prepared this great, user-friendly survivors manual. "Read Less, Learn More" is their creed and I am eager to embrace their doctrine. The format is attractive, logical, friendly, and contains everything the average home PC user needs to get up and running with Windows 98. This is a book that will hold your hand, and whisper words of encouragement as you navigate the minefields of yet another upgrade. What they did for Windows 95, they have done for Windows 98.

Are you eventually going to need that 1000 + page exhaustive reference book? Maybe. But for now, this guide will get you up and clicking and minimize the stress and strain associated with learning yet another upgrade. By the way, what was wrong with 3.1 Windows?
