2.0 out of 5 stars good for teachers in the northeast
I bought this book hoping that it would help me prepare for teaching interviews in a mid-size southern city school system. I found the advice mostly inappropriate for my teaching situation, particularly in terms of dress, formality, and even the path of the application process.
I moved down here from the New York metro area, where the author is based and has...

As a recent Education graduate looking for a job in elementary education, I tried this book for information that would give me a leg up over other candidates. I liked it so much that after returning it to the library, I bought a copy.

The book has chapters devoted to cover letters, resumes, portfolios, preparing yourself (your looks) for the interview, and chapters of sample questions--general, elementary, middle school, high school, language arts, science, social studies, mathematics, and special education. The questions also provided "keys to your answer" and ideas for making your answer stand out when compared to those of other candidates.

The questions seemed very thorough, and I loved the ideas presented in the suggested answers. The chapters on preparing for the interview, such as resume writing, cover letters, etc, were a good starting point, but I would look for other books dedicated specifically to those subjects for more information.

This book helped me land the job. Every question that was thrown at me was in the book and I was prepared!!! I was interviewing without the book and I felt unprepared and anxious.

This great book gives you the questions and the best way to answer them with key words and concepts that make the interviewer smile with that understanding nod. You know that look :) You just have to add your own ideas into the response. After I got the book, made the recommended index cards with the questions from the book and my response, and practiced out loud, I felt ready. I had to wait 2 hours for my interview and I watched 7 people go before me and 4 people were behind me. They were reading books and newspapers while I was reading my index cards. I felt confident and ready to destroy my competition.

2 days later before I was leaving for yet another interview, I received the call with the offer. I was so excited! I was still going to my other scheduled interview because I wanted to practice my interviewing skills and I still did not actually sign the contract yet. Even at that interview, every question that was thrown at me was from the book and I nailed every one!!

This book is a must have!!

5.0 out of 5 stars "How to Get Hired", June 9, 2004
This review is from: Teacher Interviews: How to Get Them and How to Get Hired! (Paperback)
.
This is not just another "ho-hum" how-to book. Teacher Interviews by Dr. Bob Pollock is a must have for any recent graduate in search of a teaching position. The book provides suggestions from formatting your cover letter and resume to handling your offer, and everything in between. General information and guidelines are given regarding dress, personal appearance, and presentation. The sample interview questions are thorough. There are general questions, elementary, middle, and high school specific questions, as well as sample questions for each of the major subject areas and special education. Best of all, the questions have answers; not bland, "memorize this and spit it back to the interviewer" answers, the answers are more like suggestions of how you might want to address the question. This really helps to format your responses in a personal way and convey your strengths and educational philosophy in a professional manner.

I must admit that I had inside information to how helpful this book would be before I purchased it. I had the honor of taking a class taught by Dr. Pollock the semester before my student teaching experience. I had enjoyed his class and had learned a great deal, so I bought "Teacher Interviews" in the hope that the book would be just as enjoyable and enlightening about the interview process. I am pleased to say that I was hired into a phenomenal district within the first 3 weeks of my job search. Actually, I had a choice, as two districts offered me positions on the very same day. I truly feel I owe this in part to Dr. Pollock's words of wisdom, sample questions, and tips. I read the book cover to cover about a month before I began sending out resumes and I referred back to certain key parts before each interview I went on. Finally, I can say that I've had the privilege of having a professor who wrote a book that I will actually keep on my shelf.

5.0 out of 5 stars Helped me get a job, August 8, 2007
This review is from: Teacher Interviews: How to Get Them and How to Get Hired! (Paperback)
I recommend this book to all my teacher-friends who are looking for a job. It's awesome; it's separated into categories for easy skimming and includes questions with specific answers.

I got the appt for my very 1st interview on a Thursday, got the book that day, and was prepared for the actual interview the Tuesday of the next week.

I ended up getting the job and after the interview was over, the principal actually asked me, "How did you know all those things? You interview very well."

GET THE BOOK!! :)

Some of the categories included are:

1) General interview questions
2) Elementary interview questions
3) Middle school
4) High School
5) Science interview questions
6) Special Ed questions
7) Math
etc etc.

4.0 out of 5 stars Almost There, September 25, 2005
This review is from: Teacher Interviews: How to Get Them and How to Get Hired! (Paperback)
This book had a wealth of information but not exactly what I would have liked. As someone who is unsure about just what is needed, I would have like more than just pointing me in a certain direction. A lot more acceptable verbatim responses to interview questions would have been a lot more helpful to a novice such as myself.

5.0 out of 5 stars Got the job!, August 16, 2010

This review is from: Teacher Interviews: How to Get Them and How to Get Hired! (Paperback)
I bought this book because after spending five years home with my children, I felt that I had lost my edge; anxiety engulfed me and the thought of being interviewed just made me cringe. This book allowed me to be properly prepared so that I sounded not only intelligent but relaxed, as well. I was asked many similar questions at my interview that I prepared for from the book and I was able to use many of my answers for different questions; sort of a mix and match usage. In my 15 years in the work force I've never had an interview go so well. With the job market as tight as it is, yes even for teachers, I had one interview this summer, but I aced it. I just started my new job and couldn't be happier. Thank God for this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars This book helped me get hired, June 16, 2010

This review is from: Teacher Interviews: How to Get Them and How to Get Hired! (Paperback)
I ordered this book the day I got a call asking me to come and interview for an elementary teaching job. I only had a few days to read it, but that was plenty of time for me to familiarize myself with the questions and formulate my own answers based on the author's suggested ones. I can't comment on the helpfulness of the author's suggestions about resumes and cover letters because I didn't use them, but every one of the questions I was asked in my interview was in the book in some form. I felt very well prepared, and I could tell during the interview that my responses were well recieved from the expressions on the faces of the interview committee. Two days after the interview the prinicpal called and offered me the job. I really feel that this book helped me immensely in preparing me for this interview. In this economy you might only get one shot, and this book will give you the best possible chance at getting a job.

5.0 out of 5 stars Review from former student, January 29, 2006
This review is from: Teacher Interviews: How to Get Them and How to Get Hired! (Paperback)
I took Dr. Pollock's class and know that he really knows his stuff. Besides being a great professor, he also wrote a great and really helpful book. Because of his book I was able to write a fabulous resume and feel very prepared for my future interviews. This book will help you to write a great cover letter, resume, and give you the confidence you need for your interviews; and best of all it is exclusively for future teachers! Thanks Dr. Pollock!
