This is a great little story in rhyme that takes the young reader through a week at school!, November 6, 2009
This review is from: Teacher!: Showing, Helping, Caring (Hardcover)
On Monday all the children are running off to school. They have smiles on their faces and backpacks on their back and are getting ready to race up the stairs of the school where their teacher stands waving to them. Henry, Sally, Ellen and José have found their places at their tables after they have tucked their belongings into their cubbies. The teacher sets out paper, paints, glue and crayons and shows them all how to draw an amazing butterfly. Then she "shows us how to print our names, sets out puzzles, blocks, and games." On Tuesday it is time to learn about numbers, letters, a bit of addition and how to spell the word "cat."
There is a special guest who will be coming and every student has to be on his or her best behavior. "We practice how to read and spell. Teacher joins our show-and-tell." Of course playing outside is one of everyone's favorite activities of the day. Everyone loves to slide and run. Then it's back inside to work. "Computer work is fun, fun, fun! Teacher shows us how it's done." The days pass quickly and even though Friday and the "special guest" are arriving soon and everyone still is wide-eyed and smiling, especially the teacher!
This is a perfect little story in rhyme that doesn't miss a beat. It is the type of book that is perfect for the beginning reader as the words are easy to decipher, the story is fun and one that the young student can relate to. The artwork is simple like a modern day "Dick and Jane" and is quite appealing. I enjoyed walking through memory lane spending a week in the classroom with the children. This would be a perfect story to read during circle or storytime!
