Editorial Reviews

Review

"This is a critical teaching especially suited for our confusing times, as students in the West continue to adapt to the Buddhist conceptions of devotion, submission, trust, and acceptance." --Shambhala Sun

5.0 out of 5 stars Authentic Buddhist Teachings on this tricky Subject, December 27, 2009
This review is from: The Teacher-Student Relationship (Paperback)
The book's core is taken from Jamgon Kongtrul's text on Ethics The Treasury of Knowledge, Book 5: Book Five: Buddhist Ethics (v. 5) but is supplemented with a fine commentary which helps to get a better understanding on this subject matter.

The book shows the teacher-student-relationship as a gradual process of reliance which allows and includes different levels of reliance, a Vinaya Ethic Level, a Bodhisattva Ethic Level and a Vajrayana Ethic Level. It also shows what to do if the teacher has too many objective faults (or has gone astray) so that one may not harm oneself by following either a wrong guru or by following someone whose personality does not allow to rely on him any more. This could mainly happen when one jumps too quickly in a teacher student relationship in Tibetan Buddhism. All such cases are addressed and solutions are shown.

I recommend this precious book for any follower of Tibetan Buddhism, including those who feel to be "advanced" or "experienced" practitioners.
