In another nod to Moore, The Teacher's Night Before Christmas by Steven L. Layne, illus. by James Rice, St. Nick drives a school bus through the skies, with his elves and workshop in tow, extolling the virtues of instructors everywhere. (Sept.) ~

Pop quiz: How does Santa deliver his presents to good educators on Christmas Eve? Keep your eyes on your own book and find the answer!
Nothing compares to the excitement of children as Christmas approaches. Imagine the havoc in classrooms across the country on the last days of school before the holiday!
This pedagogical twist on the Christmas classic will delight teachers (and even students) everywhere. The traditional trappings of Christmas at school-the Christmas pageant, a visit to a local nursing home, crafts, and the room mothers' party-all end in chaos, while the teachers struggle to maintain order, and, after school, get their own shopping done. In a whimsical touch, Santa Claus arrives in his flying school bus to save the day. Teachers are sure to see themselves in this humorous parody based on the true stories of their peers.

I was so delighted to find this Christmas "gem" this past year. Having taught 1st grade for several years before becoming a principal, I know that the series of events described and depicted in this book are in fact reality. I laughed out loud, and then ordered a copy for every one of my teachers for Christmas. Best of all, as they read their new books aloud to their children, the halls of our school were filled with laughter! Mr. Layne and Mr. Rice brought a lot of joy our way this season. Thanks so much!

Clever illustrations and a humorous storyline make this a must- read Christmas picture book for both children and adults. I am a first-grade teacher, and this book is the story of my life. I read this book to my students, and they could not wait to see what funny incident happened next. They have also asked me to read it to them over and over again. I highly recommend this title.

I had the pleasure of receiving this book as a gift from not one but two different students ... I read it aloud and fell in love with it. The author is a teacher (no surprise), and I ... met him at a conference! He couldn't have been nicer. I have every intention of giving this book as a gift to my own children's teachers ... If you work in an elementary school or know someone who does, this book is a find. Best of all, the kids think it's hysterical!

I am a third-grade teacher, and I loved this story. The chaos that is portrayed on the pages of this delightful picture book is so true regarding what it is like the last few days before Christmas vacation. I especially loved reading about the room mom commandos and the yearly Christmas pageant. I have bought this book as a gift for several of my colleagues who have also thoroughly enjoyed it.

I can completely appreciate this story as my wife taught for many years before we had kids ourselves and I know how busy and hectic (and stressful) the times around the holidays became and how difficult it was for the teachers to actually teach during these times of year. This book captures all of this wonderfully and presents it in a fun to read way. My kids loved how Santa and his team come to the rescue to teachers and give them some needed relief. The book also was a wonderful testament to the dedication of teachers and all that they do to make our children's lives that much more meaningful!

I'm a second grade teacher and received this book as a gift from a child and I LOVE it! I love it so much that I got a copy for a few of my teacher friends because as teachers, we often do put planning our classes' activities before our own Christmas activities and find ourselves rushing, just as depicted in the book. This book is a hilarious play on the traditional "Night Before Christmas" with rhyming text and very funny but true statements like "Their brains were all frazzled from school celebrations and the seasonal rush of pre-Xmas vacation" and "The festive art projects, a yearly tradition, had ended as always in room demolition." As the teachers are shopping in the mall, St. Nick pulls up in a school bus instead of a sleigh, telling them not to worry and he had the teachers get in line like students and from his "grade book" instead of a Naughty/Nice list, he read the teacher's names and stated that since the teachers were so busy working hard for the students, he'd take care of their wish lists. I just love the play on the traditional story and all the little details like him in a school bus instead of a sleigh. It really adds humor to the book.

Aside from the text being funny and very applicable to all the teachers out there, the illustrations are hysterical and depict the children doing funny things that aren't even mentioned in the story. Every time you reread it, you notice more little details in the illustrations that you didn't see the previous time. The illustrations are very detailed, colorful, and bright, though some of the people's faces look a little scary.

Not only is this book a great read for teachers, but my students love when I read this aloud and have a better appreciation for what we do as teachers to make the holiday season fun for them. This is the perfect gift for the teacher in your life!

If you are looking for something different to give your childs teacher, try this book. Have your child dedicate the book to her teacher and in turn, the whole class gets to enjoy the book. It's something different that our teachers appreciated. Fun for all.

'm a preschool teacher of 4s & 5s and am collecting ethnic versions of The Night Before Christmas. This version contains concepts that are indigenous to the Hillbilly culture, like Santa's sleigh being a schoolbus. If you like The Night Before Christmas, you'll like this version; my children and I did.
