Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Kindergarten-Grade 3 A photo essay that presents a different view of the handicapped. Brian, a young teacher, was injured in a freak lacrosse accident and is now confined to a wheelchair. The essay follows him through a typical day, showing especially his interaction with the children in the day care center where he works. The black-and-white photographs show Brian working with the children and illustrate that all is not perfectfor instance, there is little room for a wheelchair and the children when playing a game. Powers makes it clear that the fall that Brian suffered would not normally cause paralysis, nor is his condition contagious. At times the text is overly sweet, such as "He knows how to take care of himself, and other people, too," but generally the book gives an honest picture of the life of a disabled person. Margaret C. Howell, Cameron Elementary School, Fairfax County, Va.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book is wonderful, August 18, 2011
This review is from: Our Teacher's in a Wheelchair (Library Binding)
Not only does this book teach children tolerance and acceptance of those who are "different" it also is an underlying love story from the author to her then-fiance, the subject of the book. I was fortunate enough to know them both, and my picture actually appears in this book twice. I have very fond memories of Brian and hope that he and Mary Ellen are well. I personally would buy every copy I can. :)

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding, stereotype-shattering book!, November 15, 1999

This review is from: Our Teacher's in a Wheelchair (Library Binding)
A matter-of-fact book with lots of photographs about a male pre-school teacher who gets around in a wheelchair. Understated, highly engaging non-fiction.
