As I read this book, I kept thinking of the educators I would love to share the book with - birthday and holiday lists abounded!

Poetter has done an excellent job of cyphering out the layers of nuanced needs, both for teachers and students, in today's electronic and social age. His self-reflection upon classroom successes and losses guide the reader to some of the critical issues facing today's teachers on an hourly and minute-to-minute basis. This book would make an excellent discussion focus for both current and pre-service teachers, holding the potential to empower genuine professional and personal reflection

Tom Poetter was a model college student--engrossed in and inspired by his studies, skilled and enthusiastic in baseball and basketball, shrewd but kind as a respected resident counselor. Those qualities were enhanced as he became, first, a high school teacher at a private academy and, later, a university professor of education. To test his theories, he taught a class in a nearby school, and "Teaching Again" documents his new discoveries about the students, the changing school environment, and himself. His enthusiastic efforts to teach, counsel, and challenge his students are sorely tried, but Tom's concern for young human beings and his faith in the long-term effects of education prevail.

Teaching Again will pull on the heartstrings of any reader. We have all been students, but we rarely question what it is like on the other side. What is it that teachers think about during class and after class? What is a teacher's day really like? What makes a teacher continue to teach? Tom beautifully, and realistically, portrays and reflects upon his interactions with a freshmen English class from the beginning days of the semester until the final day with his students.
Teaching Again brings back the human aspect of the teacher. Every reader has had days filled with unpredictable success, and days where crawling back in bed seems like the only option. Believe it or not, teachers do too! You will laugh out loud as you read what goes through Tom's mind, and you will tear up as you understand how invested Tom is in each of his student's education.
Tom's passion truly shines as he examines the very essence of teaching. Once you begin reading, Teaching Again, I promise you will not be able to set it down!
