Editorial Reviews

Review

"Bracke and Tye have written a remarkable book, one only possible in an interdisciplinary conversation. The book works--and works well--at the interface between 'state of the art' educational theory about the learning processes and the cruciality of biblical faith."

"Bracke and Tye challenge us in a new intercultural approach to teaching the Bible. The authors also capsule information about brain research and make it palatable to everyday teachers. I became so excited with these ideas that I immediately put them to use in my training!"

About the Author

Karen B. Tye is professor emerita at Eden Theological Seminary, St. Louis, Missouri. She conducts workshops throughout the United States and is the author of Basics of Christian Education and Your Calling as a Teacher and is coauthor of Teaching the Bible in the Church from Chalice Press.

The first chapter on how the brain works -- and the real-life implications thereof for how we learn -- is alone worth the price of the book. Solid science, and understandable explanations. Some parts are a little more dense than others, but this is a book that a can function like a reference book -- i.e., one could profitably return to it multiple times over the years. It is helpful reading not only for those who teach the Bible in the church but for ministers interested in shaping sermons that authentically interpret and communicate the meaning of scripture. Contains some very practical examples of how to shape Bible study that is critically sound, spiritually solid and fully engaging for people of various ages.

An easy-to-follow guide for identifying the best method to teach biblical wisdom. This book is listed on a reading list for those interested in leading mission studies. I have referred to Bracke's book many times as I prepare mission studies and Sunday school lessons.

Book discusses methods of teaching; how we teach, why we teach, and how we learn. Christian educators should read this book. I read it for a class with the same topic in seminary. book is not so lofty in terminology that non seminarians can't follow it. I recommend this book for Sunday school teachers and Bible study teachers as well as pastors.

The first two chapters of this book especially offer excellent information about how people learn and how we teach. It helped me articulate how I convey information to my group of confirmation students in a way that connects with their experience, creates space for them to engage with the material, and hopefully gives them ways to integrate what they are learning into their lives. I appreciate the way this book frames the task and joy of teaching.

Provided useful information for preachers and teachers of all ages. This will be a useful reference for me, not just a read and shelve textbook.
