Book Description

July 30, 2006 1851968342 978-1851968343
Book history has developed in recent years as an increasingly dynamic, cross-disciplinary endeavour. Building on the widespread interest in material culture, visual culture, and media studies, a new vitality has been brought to this area of research. "Teaching Bibliography, Textual Criticism, and Book History", an exciting and original new monograph, offers a variety of approaches to incorporating discussions of book history or print culture into graduate and undergraduate classrooms. Through twenty-five collected essays, it considers the book as a literary, historical, cultural, and aesthetic object. Given the growing popularity of book history across numerous fields, this collection represents many viewpoints and diverse backgrounds. The essays will therefore appeal to university teachers incorporating textual studies and research methods into their courses, either as a component or as a central focus.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent range of pedagogical tools, October 18, 2010
This review is from: Teaching Bibliography, Textual Criticism, And Book History (Hardcover)
This work contains an inspiring series of essays from professionals in the field, at a range of institutions, teaching a range of related subjects. I was very pleased by articles that addressed interdisciplinarity, the problems of teaching without a major special collections library, and suggestions for exercises that helped (and warnings about what hindered) students. As a teacher at the very beginning of my career (full disclosure: grad student), this book shows what can be done for our students with limited budgets, limited resources, but a vast array of knowledge and creativity.
