About the American Master Teacher Program

This series of content books on physical education has been developed as part of the American Master Teacher Program for Children's Physical Education. AMTP provides practical, state-of-the-art courses and materials to help train preservice physical educators and help in-service professionals improve their teaching, earn recertification credit, and gain recognition as master teachers. AMTP is a quality physical education program that benefits both teacher and student. About the Authors

Tom and Laraine Ratliffe became interested in teaching fitness concepts during the mid-1970s while working as laboratory assistants for Dr. Russell Pate, a nationally recognized authority on children's fitness. Since then they have been actively involved in passing on the message that fitness is important for children through numerous presentations and workshops at the international, national, state, and local levels. They also have published many articles in the Journal of Physical Education, Recreation and Dance, the Journal of Teaching in Physical Education, and The Physical Educator.

Tom Ratliffe is an assistant professor of physical education at The Florida State University. He received his EdD in physical education teacher education from the University of Georgia in 1984. Tom's extensive academic background has given him excellent experience in curriculum design, motor development, teaching methods, and student assessment. For 7 years he was an elementary physical educator who taught fitness concepts and promoted children's fitness. He taught physical education teacher preparation courses at the University of Georgia and the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. He was also involved in the "Goodbodies" after-school health and fitness program for overweight children.

Tom is a member of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance, the American Educational Research Association, and the Florida Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (FAHPERD).

Laraine McCravey Ratliffe is a physical educator for Grades K-3 at the Florida State University School. Since 1972 her role as a teacher has given her valuable hands-on experience in developing and refining fitness curriculum materials for children. Her involvement also extends outside of the classroom--whether teaching in the "Goodbodies" program or organizing fitness clubs at elementary schools, she is committed to helping children learn about and experience the benefits and joy of regular physical activity.

Laraine received her undergraduate degree from Appalachian State University and her MAT in physical education teacher education in 1976 from the University of South Carolina.
