About the Author

This series of content books on physical education has been developed as part of the American Master Teacher Program for Children's Physical Education. AMTP provides practical, state-of-the-art courses and materials to train preservice physical educators and help in-service professionals improve their teaching, earn recertification credit, and gain recognition as master teachers. AMTP is a quality physical education program that benefits both teacher and student.

David Belka, an associate professor of teacher education at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, has a wealth of experience in developing and teaching games. For 9 years he taught games as part of elementary physical education and intramural curricula in New Castle, Pennsylvania, and Toledo, Ohio. His research on children's perceptual-motor functioning and catching skills, more than a decade of teaching games progressions in undergraduate courses, professional publications, and experience in conducting in-service teacher workshops enabled him to create the developmental approach he applies to the games in this book.

David Belka earned his PhD in elementary physical education from the University of Toledo in 1976. He is a member of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance and actively contributes to the field of elementary physical education by presenting papers and poster board sessions, planning symposia, and reviewing articles.
