This text combines traditional Olympic-style skills with the developmental approach of educational gymnastics and explains the why and how of teaching gymnastics effectively. It presents 24 practical, child-tested examples of gymnastics activities called Learning Experiences that are suitable for ages three to eleven. The Learning Experiences are divided into three skill themes: travelling, statics and rotation.

About the Author

Peter Werner has more than 30 years' experience as a student and teacher of gymnastics. His background in Olympic and educational gymnastics provides him with an excellent developmental perspective to teaching gymnastics.

Peter earned his PED in physical education from Indiana University in 1971. He spent 6 months in 1987 at the University of Loughborough in England studying educational gymnastics. Peter teaches educational gymnastics and elementary physical education methods courses at the University of South Carolina, and he regularly spends time in the public schools teaching elementary physical education.

For 2 years Peter chaired the Southern District of the Council on Physical Education for Children (COPEC), and he was the publications coordinator for the National Association for Sport and Physical Education (NASPE) for 3 years. He has also written more than 40 articles and 5 books, including Learning Through Movement, and has made several national gymnastics presentations. Peter was selected the 1986 South Carolina Alliance of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance College Teacher of the Year and was the recipient of the 1993 University of South Carolina Michael J. Mungo Teaching Award.

Peter is a member of the American Alliance of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance, NASPE, and COPEC.
